  • Cucumber RESTINA offered for Melon MINNESOTA MIDGET and/or COLLECTIVE FARM WOMAN

I have F1 all-female RESTINA mini-cucumber seed. A robust and hardy outdoor variety, producing up to 60 succulent fruits per plant (i.e. averaging 3.5 to 4.0 Kilos per plant). Can be pickled though I have never used them as a gherkin. Looking to swap say 10 seeds of this for either MINNESOTA MIDGET or COLLECTIVE FARM WOMAN (say 5 seeds of one or the other (or both) would be sufficient.

    Mike,

I have Minnesota Midget seeds I bought last year, which I just don't have room to grow. Can let you have these if you want (no need for swap, unless Restina will grow in container?).

Sow seeds indoors in earl to mid-April, in fibre pots then transplant two per 20Litre pot outdoors with thermal protection till around mid to end-May. I train mine vertically up strings/wires/bamboos on our patio. It's an all female F1 which makes life simpler for fruit set. Got first fruit during June. From time of first flowering started giving a half strength tomato fertilizer feed (I used Tomorite but there are much cheaper versions!) with every watering. Pots were mulched. Don't let pot saucers dry out in dry spells - water generously till saucer overflow. No need to pinch out main shoot apex - jut leave vines to grow vertically (but you will need to nurture this a bit) - mine were around 2.5 metres by end of season. Last 2 years mine have consistently given between 30 to 60 mini cucumbers (delicious for fresh salads) per plant or 3.5 to around 4.5 Kilos per plant, fruiting from June to October. Appears to be a robust cucumber variety, very good disease resistance and more tolerant to cooler temperatures than other cucumber varieties. I'll PM you for contact details for swapping seeds.
