      I'm soon to start pruning my Dad's huge Grapevine (Black Hamburg??). I was just going to compost the prunings until I read this thread.

      If anyone can advise me how to root a cutting I would be grateful . If it is possible to do this, at this time of year, I should have plenty for others - could someone let me know please?

        I too will be pruning soon. I usually take cuttings about 12 inches long of pencil think wood. It needs to have at leave 2 growing eyes. One is cut square (at the bottom of the cutting) the other is slanted. I push the cutting down into used pots of compost (left over from peppers etc) until the lower bud is well covered, but the top bud is clear of the compost, and leave them in the cold greenhouse over the winter. They begin to sprout leaves fron the top bud, but often do not root until around May. Just put them outside and keep them watered. I had 100% strike rate last year, but I don't know how people got on with the cuttings I sent out. They were just sticks. I think it cost aroung £2 to send half a dozen sticks for people to root their own.
        PM me if anyone is interested in a white seedless grade for eating. Ripens outside by end Sept in the south, earlier under glass. Variety is Himrod.
        I could not live without a garden, it is my place to unwind and recover, to marvel at the power of all growing things, even weeds!

          Hiya there

          Wasn't quite sure if people wanted them and don't really want to solicit addresses from people so please please PM me if you want cuttings (Note i only send once they have started rooting, that way people get the better opportunity to grow the grapes themselves rather than stressing if it will take or not ). I have one left that has roots and two i am waiting to see if they take so first come first serve

            I am very new here, but I would love to try my hand at growing grapes, they are my boys absolute favourite fruit and I get through 2 bags of them a week between the 3 of them. I will pm you TMW, but am willing to try my hand at rooting them myself for red/black grapes.

              Hi all!

              Just resurrecting this thread, as I have finally pruned my Dad's Grapevine. I have cuttings ready to post tomorrow, as promised to BarleySugar and Mbronco, and was just wondering if anyone else wants a few? The variety is Black Hamburg, and they look just like the picture in this link;

              Vitis vinifera Black Hamburg (Frankenthaler) - Grape Vine

              Please PM me your address, if interested. First come first served! Many thanks, and happy harvest!

                      Wow! I'm glad these are proving popular, they're attractive and delicious!

                      I haven't received the PM from Herbie, as yet. I'm off to have a bath now, so will be back later. I can still probably make one more parcel after Herbie's, so if you PM me your address, they'll go in tomorrow's post.

                      Cheers!

                      Jane.
