Saved Leek Seeds!

Just got mine today Mrs D., oooh I wasn't half excited when I saw the word "Snohare" on the envelope....better than Christmas Day ! Thank you very much for them....of course you know this is going to be a perennial Sisyphean task for you....once word of your generosity leeks out !

Got my seeds today too. Thanks Mr & Mrs D! Such alot of them too. Do you have to take the seeds out of the husks? Or just plant the lot? Sorry if this is a silly question, but I have only ever planted seeds from packets!

Mrs D thank you for my seeds I am over the moon with them, can't wait to get going.
Jennie, your question about taking them out of the husks, if you don't you will have more thinning out to do as there will be a number of seedlings in the 1 space, I would also think they would all be fighting for the same nutrients, so you may not get as strong plants (Not sure about that bit it has just come into my head!) They are easy enough to split, just rub between yours hands over open newspaper. It won't matter if the husks are scattered as you plant, and the few that haven't split, doesn't really matter.
Any that come up in multiples can just be moved into another space.

I'll be sending out the last batch of leek seeds on Friday to everyone thats asked for some, so if you've PM'd me with your details there will be some in the post shortly!

We've sown a batch already, which are going great guns, now in a seed tray in the loft (under the roof light), and we've also noticed that we've about 40 or 50 that have self sewn into the greenhouse border (under the area where we had them stored for a while), so hopefully they will be ok there until we need the space, then we can prick them out into their final locations!

Anyone else sown any yet, if so whats the germination been like?

Hi mrs D i have sown some and the germination seems pretty good,for some reason it looks like half the try got the seeds and the other half didn't but maybe thats going to break through later, any how we'll not go short of leeks many thanks again, ohhh do you have any idea what type of leek they are??

Sorry NTTP, they were on our plot when we took over, large flower heads full of seeds, so we weren't even sure what they were until one of the other plot holders said they were leeks (plus there were a couple of them that were growing from seed nearby, we've now got 3 small leeks growing from the self seeded that will be ready to eat this summer, and about 50 or so growing from the self seeded seeds in the greenhouse!), so no idea of variety I'm afraid!
