I am not in the seed saving circle but I am saving seeds of a lot of my tomatoes that are growing this year. I will be happy to send them to anyone if I can have a few Bloody Butcher and a few Black Seaman. I have Kimberley and Stupice which are an early variety and quite prolific. I also have a good selection of others.
And when your back stops aching,
And your hands begin to harden.
You will find yourself a partner,
In the glory of the garden.

deseased poti pictures
This was the piccie I took before my camera died. Do you think the bite marks are mice? The bigger hand pollinated ones also had distinctive bite marks?
My son has a pet mouse so the marks look a little similar! Bugger bugger!!! Please attach sobbing smilie!
Actually lookng at them again and comparing with edna mouses apple remains in her cage, the poti bites look bigger? Rats maybe??Attached FilesLast edited by jackyspratty; 13-08-2010, 09:18 PM.

Don't know what's chomping those, but something's been at it! Looks like it won't survive anyway as it has brown rot on it; best chop it off and hope for another to come along.
Anyway - good news is that I harvested all my parsnip seed heads - 1 shoe box, 1 bucket and one linen bag - once they are all dried off I'll scrunch the lot down and there will be enough parsnips for everyone....and the rest!
And some I sowed 2 weeks ago have germinated. YAY
I'm currently sat here picking off carrot seeds from the first 3 heads. Loads more to come.
And the beetroot, is turning brown now - so in a few weeks will have another shoe box of that.

The trombocino is shooting up the arch now. Any tips on doing this? The fruuits get very massive apparantly and long. Not sure how seedy they are either?
In a quandry whether to pick and get seed when they are a reasonable length or leave them to get huge? (worried cheap lidle arch will collapse!!!)
Gonna hava google too but thought someone here may know!!!
Foe those of you going to grapestock, see you saturday!!!

I will try and support it! Have just read that they are best eaten when harvested 8-18 inches, but if left on the vine they can each 251bs!!!
I may have to devise a rota for each member to come to leeds to take turns holding it up!!!!
Have yet to pollinate one! But many small fruits are now appearing. So hopefully in next week. Just a bit fed up with the autumnal weather now!!
Also Im not sure how many seeds there are in each fruit. I know that the seeds are concentrated in the bulbous trombone end, and they are not seed laden. Ill try and find out from the supplier. It may mean that we just have a few each (which hopefully should be enough loking at the size of it!!! And I had 3 seeds and they all germinated successfully. Thankfully I gave the other 2 away as there would not have been room here!!!
Thanks

I am very sad that today I had to bin all but one of my bloody butcher tomato plants due to blight.
Luckily I already saved a batch of seeds from one of the earlier ripe tomatoes so fear not there will still be seeds to share. I must say that they are probably the most flavoursome toms I have ever tasted. I will definitely be growing these every year from now on.
How many tom seeds per person are required?

I'd be happy with 3 or 4 Incy. That allows for one or two not germinating and lets us grow a couple of plants. We could even 'armpit' them for extras leter in the season. Then, of course, we can save as many seeds as we want for the following year. Are there enough for this?

I haven't had any blight, but my 'Auntie Madge's' tomato plants have been hit with botrytis. I caught it, and lopped off most of the foliage, so think there should still be enough clean tomatoes to save the seed from. They're a lovely little plum, look a bit like Olivade but not quite so uniform. Juicy, good sweet/tart balance, and just meaty enough to make a worthwhile sauce too.
