My lovely Mammy bought me various edible treats for my xmas and in amongst them were some very yummy Peppadew Peppers stuffed with feta. The peppers had a really nice, zingy taste (not hot, not sweet but 'zingy') and I would really like to grow them but have found that Peppadew is a trademarked variety and the seeds don't seem to be available for general populus to grow. Does anyone know of pepper varieties with a similare taste, or even better where I might get the seeds?

I'm sure this was a talked about topic on a garden forum last year? Or knowing my memory it was somewhere (another forum) else entirely. But I definately remember reading about peppadews and them being trade-marked. Obviously I can't remember the discussion outcome (or I'd tell you!) but I think someone might have found a seed source or a similar pepper?
I'll have a google and let you know if I find owt.Last edited by Lesley Jay; 15-01-2007, 01:06 PM.To see a world in a grain of sand

Peppadew seed is not available to buy but I actually aquired some seed last year from South Africa via a kindly chap. These were successfully grown on and I managed to produce some more seed.
This seed is going to be used to produce even more seed so hopefully by the autumn there will be enough to distribute along similar lines to the banana shallot seed given away this year, thus giving us a chance to get a viable UK strain going.
Please be patient and come autumn, some seed will be up for grabs and once more it will be gratis.

My Peppadews (seeds courtesy of Piglet) are covered in little peppers, but not ripe yet. If we get a few weeks decent weather now I should have plenty of seed to share so everybody keep fingers crossed for some sunshine.

I have been harvesting mine for the last few weeks. They are nice and red and have a lovely flavour. Will send some sun your wau Alice since we are having lovely sunny weather at the moment.

Possible alternatives to peppadew
http://seeds.thompson-morgan.com/uk/en/product/63/1 or
http://seeds.thompson-morgan.com/uk/...duct/gww0503/1
both appear very similar to the peppadew variety. I was in Aldi the other day and bought as tasty a variety stuffed with feta which was selling for 99p per jar. Must have a look to see if it lists the cultivar

I've brought my two peppadew plants indoors. They are now houseplants standing in the warm south-facing patio windows where they get more sun (when it shines!) than in my mini-greenhouse. Lots of fruit on the tallest plant - over five feet - and lots of flowers just starting with tiny fruit on the other plant. I'm hoping that the warmth will ripen the fruit.

Mine are the same as yours Tricia but still in the greenhouse. Looks as if summer has gone and they're not going to ripen there. I'm going to do like you and bring one indoors to see if that will help. Good luck to both of us.

An update on my two plants. There are now half a dozen fruit that have turned red, with a few partially red and lots more still green. My question is - how long do I leave the red ones on the plant to ensure good quality seeds?
I've also been reading on another forum that chili plants are notoriously promiscuous and will cross fertilize . I didn't think of this - my two plants were in close company with Jumbo, Californian Wonder and Gypsy sweet peppers until I brought them indoors, so I'm no longer sure about the purity of my Peppadew seeds .
Can you enlighten me please PW?
Tricia
