  • Wanted - summer savoury + Good King Henry

    Hello all

Just wondering if ayone has some spare seeds of the following?

Summer Savoury- Have heard that it counteracts the side effedts of jerusalem artichokes? Im ok but my OH would really appreciate a remedy!!

Good King Henry - I have some but after 3 attempts of germination have given up the seeds as a bad job. There is no sign of life in them at all.

If anyone has any spare, I am happy to either send a SAE or can have a go at a swap? Have a fair few seeds but not necessariry a wide variety yet. But am happy to have ago at either.

    Many thanks for looking

I have some summer savoury, quite happy to share some seeds with you Donna. Although I must point out, I have tried 3 times with 3 lots of different seed and not had any luck with it.
(Coincidently the same with good king henry....??!!)

Why dont I find a new packet from somewhere for both, and Ill send half to you if you want some? Really would like to try both, GKH meant to be poor mans asparagus? Also like the idea of growing some old fashioned stuff.

Shall I look into it and bung you some in the post if i get some? At least we know the seed is fresh then, but then if it doesnt germinate it just means I'm a bit rubbish! Oh no! Sounds like Miss Willmotts ghost all over again! Gave up with that one! Did you have any luck thea?

But the again just re read yours and youve tried 3 different seed sources! Perhaps its a case of miss Whilmotts ghost lurking and its just a bugger to germinate? Anyone else had any luck with summer savoury and Good King Henry Germination?

        Hi Donna,
I though I might just throw some seeds in the veg bed with the beans, maybe it'll come up better in situ...(fingers x)

If you want to have some you're more than welcome, (its probably me.) They are organic ones.

The Miss Willmots Ghost is still in the freezer....Thanks, that reminds me, I need to get it out and give it two weeks in fridge!

        Take care xx

                Hello Thea & Donna (sounds like '70's pop-group - d'you remember 'uptown-topranking'??)
Don't give up on the GKH, I sowed some at the end of March, nothing!! Forgot about them until last week, and there they are, about a couple of inches tall now!! They obviously don't like being watched, and thrive on neglect!! Will have a looksee if I've got any seeds left, but don't hold your breath, as I don't think there were many in the pack.

Thanks all, had a little read up.

GKH is slow to germinate (an understatement!), and is better if stratified first. Maybe in the fridge in moist conditions for a week. Better grown in light shade.

Summer savoury - Prefers a soil temp of 60-70degrees
Have read it prefers to be surface sown but also read to sow 1.5mm deep. Takes 14-21 days to germinate!

Any tips? Apart from sow it and forget it? Do you completely forget it, or give it a spray now and then to keep moist? Inside or outside?

I obviously like a challenge as i keep picking slow germinaters! Celeriac, summer savoury, GKH.... Had a little luck with celeriac after tips here (thanks zaz!) so fingers crossed with the rest!

Like all my slow germinators; I just sow and once I've lost interest in whether they are ever going to show themselves, I put them at the back of the greenhouse and leave them be. They get watered along with the others as and when but no special treatment.
