  • Egyptian Walking Onions

    Ok.

So I was clearing out my seeds today and remembered that I have a pot of these left over that aren't going to get used this year.

They are little sets, but will produce these fantastic top setting onions; more for show than to eat. The originals were from Canada and my 9 sown produced 2 that toppled over and have regrown; and at least 280 baby sets which I removed from the remaining 7 onions [I like em, but not enough to put a whole garden over to them].

So, I don't want any swaps, just an SAE with a large letter stamp for the return...I'll divvy them up but to give people a good handful I'll split them into 5 - so first 5 to respond gets them.

PM me to get my address, and when you do send the SAE to me; make sure you put Egyptian Onions on the envelope that will be coming back to you....otherwise I will forget!

p.s....these are great for kids' gardens....

I've pm'd you - for some reason my note here didn't take - probably trying to do too much at one time - hope I'm in the top 5!

    Cheers

Andrea, i have these for the first time this year, what is the flavour like, as i will not be touching them for a bit so they can get established, i had hopes that the sets would end up the same size as shallots.

If they are walking onions why can't you point them in the right direction and make their own way? I bet it's cos they are lazy due to the modern car driving culture.

                    Hi Zazen

My envelope finally arrived back today and I noticed an extra stamp put on by yourself - this should not have been necessary as I actually got the thing weighed at the PO and they said it was OK to use the 2 small stamp equivalent to make to ABOVE the cost of a large letter stamp. This also included an assumption of the return item's weight.

If it was your choice to speed up delivery like this then Thank You - but if not and I fear that you may have been done for insufficient stamps on the inward letter pls let me know so I can follow up and get you compensated. This is not the first time it has happened to me on weighed articles.

I trust the small number of sets will spread quickly?
Do you advise immediate planting and if so indoors or outdoors?
                    Cheers

                      Hiya

I checked the postage and for a large letter it needed two second class plus a 1p stamp, all I had was another spare stamp so I popped that on it. I didn't have time to get it weighed...I didn't want you to get an 'insufficient weight' charge for the sake of 1p!

Just sorry it took so long to send...what with exams and work and getting my manure taken away I lost track a bit.

Yes, if you plant them now, they will grow enough to walk next summer!

I'd put them into modules first, and plant out once they are a few inches tall.

And Lizzy - I harvested the rest last night so PM me as I will have a few spare now.......

OK Thanks for that - but I think you were calculating on First Class - my calculation is always 2nd class for this kind of thing - cost for that 51p - 2x2nd class stamps=64p so well over! 1st class lge letter 66p. I pout on the extra both ways for pretty much the same reasons as you - couldn't be bothered for extra trip to PO for penny stamps!

Never mind - if there's ever anything I can supply to you - I'll be happy to post to you w/out sae.

                          Special onions!

Egyptian walking onions seem very very popular.

                          Are they very good eating??

I have read online that you can eat all the plant. Is that true?

Could you pickle the little diddy onions sitting at the top?

Sorry for all the questions but curious about their popularity.

Zazen - just thought I'd let you know that I planted them up - a little later than I should have - and one has already got a little green shoot on it about ½inch tall!

Another was rather small and pathetic and has since failed - but I'm sure its bros/sis will do well and be ready for planting out next year - cheers.

Shuskin - can't answer your q's specifically - but anything out of the ordinary seems to be very popular on this website - and you'd better move fast if you want to try them out!
