  • A question about swaps.

I know i haven't posted 10 posts or been a member for a month, but i have a question that hopefully someone can answer before i can start swapping next year.

I belong to another allotment site that does swaps, we used to have a sed parcel that used to go round and round with people adding and deducting what we needed. However we were ambushed by some other people who were sent from a money savings site who were told if they join the swaps they could get free seeds for nothing and didn't have to contribute anything, needless to say the seed parcel died,

It was resurected and we had to email the total weight and price each time we passed it on, to see who was taken the stuff.

The question i have do you have a seed parcel and if so how do i join it next year or are the swaps done on an individual basis?

I have just taken on a second plot, i have loads of seeds to swap and i am looking for new / different things to try.

Never having grown peas before and not being a lover of them I had no interest in buying a packet, however after being told how nice home grown one are, i found a small pack in the seed parceland thought i would try them, the harvest was lovely and i rushed off to buy a whole pack and managed to get a 2nd harvest in.

i'm sorry this has turned into an essay.

    Regards

    PB

Yes we had 13 on the go this time last year - however only 8 got to their intended participants......I know that some people held onto them and haven't been seen or heard of since. Well, they are active on other fora and faceache but refuse to answer any of my emails/messages.

We have stopped the few that we have had on the go this summer; even with a few it is exceptionally hard to track. We were posting the tracking number on here in the end so that we could ALL see where each parcel was.

Before we get back up and running, I'll be holding a meeting with the 2 people that have been running the parcels so that we amend our agreement and management to make sure this doesn't happen again.

You might want to get involved in the seed circle as well, we have 2 this year and will be doing at least another one next year. This is when you save from one or two seed types - send all the seed [after taking some for yourself for next year] to a central person who collects from the others in the circle and sends it back out to everyone. It means you save from 2 and get in return [depending on numbers] about 20 different types back again. You increase your range significantly with veg that you know people find tasty!

But - could you pop your location into your profile....just so that we know whereabouts you are. Cheers

I hate it when that happens, as a few spoil it for the many.

I always send things recorded as i have had things go missing in the post and its great that you can track it and claim compenstion if things go missing.

I 'll keep my fingers crossed for next year.

Unfortunately, if people don't send it - you can't!!!

And if they don't let us know the tracking number, you can't...

Naming and shaming is the only way - unfortunately. As my two seed parcel chums will tell you.

Seed swapping is a fine tradition and we are keen for it to continue - it's those that never send theirs or keep begging and getting them for free that annoy the good users on here. Which is why we have rules and hope that everyone follows them. After all, they were put in place after consultation.

sorry i meant i personally send everything recorded, i used to sell a loads of things on ebay and got mad when buyers said they never received it, I even had 1 person sign for it and then claim they didn't receive it.

Do your rules mean you have to send it within a couple of days of receiving and leting you know if there will be a delay.

                regards

It is implied to turn it around fast but.....there's very little we can really do.

We have to trust that people will - but sometimes the post can be the downfall...and one was signed for getting TO the uk but nobody ever saw it again......highly annoying to the sender as well as the receiver!

It might be an idea to have a rule were you have had to have been in at least one seed circle, before you get the parcel, that way you could "weed out" the freeloaders

That's like saying you can't work a job without relevant experience. Er, how do you get the experience without being in a job?

To be honest - there's only been 2 circles so far so that wouldn't work....

And the circle is completely different to swapping......

I think we can stick with the current rules for now.....

Not at all. anyone can join a seed swap, and if they dont send their seeds you know what they are.

I dont have a proven track record yet, other than one or two straight swaps, and I want to join the seed parcel, but I'm prepared to wait if its good for the stability of the parcel system
