The Grapevine Seed Circle Number 5 - Chilli Special

    The idea is:

some of us grow some chilli some seeds for sharing out. (We are not limited to 16!)

    Then we share them out.

    Simples .

Where I got the idea from:
    SeedCircle

    Some simple seed saving instructions:
    How To Save Seed

The idea is that this thread can become a place to share what we are growing, when it is coming up to harvesting, and where we are all with things.

Also, post any queries or techniques that we have devised to keep the seed clean.

Note: chillis are open to crossing, so these will need isolating.

    Ok - first job.

Post on here which chillis you feel you can save in 2011 - but if you change your mind, no worries.

    First come, first served.....

1 - Northepaul - Bolivian Rainbow and Hungarian Hotwax or possibly Hungarian Black(so far) R
    2 - The Large One - Bengal Naga R
3 - Zazen999 -Kalibi Round or Purple Beauty sweet pepper, Iranian Round Chili or Ryton Red R
    4 - Newton R
5 - T8Ter -Fatalli, Gambia Red, Naga Morich, Bhut Jolokia, Numex twilight R

    Oh go on then

Your link doesn't work, so can I put this on:

    Sweet peppers and chillies

Sweet peppers and chillies are both members of the same species, Capsicum annuum (some less common chillies come from other capsicum species).

Pepper flowers are self pollinating, and will set fruit without any insect activity.
However, they will also cross readily, and sweet peppers will happily cross with chillies. You need to isolate your plants ... you could consider making an isolation cage to cover 3 or 4 plants. This is easy to do, and costs very little, especially if you can get hold of some old net curtain material.

To save the seed, take peppers on your isolated plants which have ripened fully to their final colour (usually yellow or red). Cut the peppers open carefully, and rub the seeds gently off of the 'core' onto a plate. (Wear rubber gloves) Dry the seeds in a warm but not hot place
