  • horseradish?

So i just posted a thread asking about how easy it is to grow horseradish and since it seems to be so easy to grow and is a plant that will easily take over I thought I'd ask here first if anyone has any they would share. will obviously send sae and can see what I have seedwise in return.

    Thanks

Frankly, horseradish is generally so prolific all you need to do is get a bit of root (usually from someone trying to get rid of theirs!) and stick it in the ground. If it doesn't grow you are extremely unlucky!

It is also the reason many people grow it in pots, to stop it spreading and taking over like mint!

Are they in a pot or in the ground?

the ones I put in a pot took ages to come, even to the extent that I thought they must have rotted away. But no, come March time, they poked their way through. (They do die down over winter too.)

I did notice that the one that I bought doesn't look like the more traditional horseradish that I scrounged (which looks very much like dock leaves), and seems to be some japanese variety that was a bit more reluctant to grow.

It certainly can get out of hand if it likes the conditions, but at least there's a tasty reward when you dig up the unwanted ones!

I've found it does best in fairly damp ground (I think it's a marginal plant in the wild). Don't know if you've seen the thread about cheap plants in Wilkos / Woolworths etc, but that's where I got my last lot of Horseradish. You buy strips of root called thongs and just shove them in the ground.
                Resistance is fertile

There's tons of horseradish all over the garden at my ex's farm. I thought when we moved in that I would be able to make my own HR sauce. The roots are all under a roman pavement and impossible to dig out. Did the romans have horseradish?

There's lots of it growing in the wild - escaped from captivity. Its crinkly leaves give it away - that and the smell.
