  • What do you keep your seeds in?

ok i dont think this question has been asked before, and i need to know the answer as its my first year on saving seed. so heres my questions (sort of like a poll!):

where do you dry your seeds? i.e. shed, greenhouse etc
what do you store your seeds in? i.e. big envelopes, jars etc
what do you send your seeds in? i.e. money envelopes, ziplock bags etc.

Ive done a little research on this, but id like to know how you guys do it (not links to websites as ive look at lots of them), i also think this may be a usefull topic not only for me but other members that are thinking about saving seeds.

I will be grateful for any/all answers.

    thanks,
    matt

I tend to dry my seeds in the open air in the house/airing cupboard. With things like flowers and parsnips etc. I just shove the whole seed head in a paper bag and put in the airing cupboard.
I keep them in whatever I have to hand but this is mostly paper bags or small pots -creme fraiche/yoghurt pots with lids. I do have dried beans in Le Parfait/Kilner jars because I use them dried throughout the year and just pinch a couple when I need them to sow or give away.
I keep all my seeds indoors because I don't really have anywhere completely dry outside and I have heard tell of mice getting in and eating all the seeds
I make my own seed packets from templates the I get from t'internet.

^^^^ Wot Scarey does except not in the airing cupboard, just in the kitchen.
Stored in paper bags or old envelopes or jamjars - depending on size of seed. These go in biscuit tins or the rectangular yoghourt pots or any other handy tin.
I buy small envelopes from £shop type shops for packing smaller quantities for swapping.

never keep them in a greenhouse - they'll cook in summer, freeze in winter ...
mine used to live in their seed packets in a shoe box under the stairs .... now they're in a bigger cardboard box in the living room .... the box matches the dvd boxes (it's one of those things women do to make them happy and confuse the rest of us) ....
and paper envelopes (home made or re-used junk mail) are even cheaper than plastic bags .... and biodegradeable .....

We dry our home grown seeds in the integral garage by hanging them in paper bags from bits of string strung from wall to wall (a clothes peg secures bag to string).

Then into a correctly marked up envelope and thence (I like that word!) to a wicker basket also stored in the garage.

You need a reasonably stable temperature for seeds, not too hot or too cold.

In a kitchen cupboard in a tin box that once held a bottle of Glenmoragie. Cheers, Tony.

I dry them in paper bags or on a piece of kitchen roll on a tray. Then I store them in little lunch money envelopes inside big sandwich boxes from the pound shop and keep them in the fridge.

First time trying to save seeds last year. I tried to leave them on the plant for as long as possible but then bought them indoors and spread out on kitchen towel in either the kitchen or in the lounge. Stored them in the little paper money envelopes which I got from Ebay.

I used to dry them hanging in the garage - however all my peas and beans that I hung got nasty holes from pea mites, so I am hanging them elsewhere this year!!

Since I replanted my garden from scratch last year I have very little spare, I'm still in the process of bringing in more. I do like splitting and saving bulbs though - tulips, daffs, snowdrops

I store mine (after drying on a kitchen work top, then freezing (the peas and beans at least) since I had crawlies on the beans last year outside and wanted to sure of good seed) in double plastic and/or paper envelopes and then into lock n lock containers under the stairs. Soooo many lock n locks. . .
