  • swap seed with italian seedsaver

    hi guys,
i've some friend in italy that like us are growing they allotment with any type of veg and this summer some of them have send me some heirloom variety of seeds mainly tomatoes and peppers... also most of them asked me if there where some kind of special english variety of any veg that will be intersting for them to try... so i thought what you think to swap some seed with them... i have some seeds of tomatoes that grow in south italy and they are called winter tomatoes because they have a very thick skin so when you harvest them when are orange they will ripe all winter and can keep for 6 month in a frost free garage, plus some very sweet peppers called pappacella from Naples....plus i have few apulia striped courgette ( i only have 10 left) do you think is possible to do that... this friends also have a lot of different veg considered that i don't have an allotment i told them to not bother send me other seeds that i don't know when to use ( i shouldn't i never thought about this)
    so what you think?
i don't know how works here but in italy they have a seed bank that everybody send seeds and them this man send seeds to everyone else

I’d be very interested in swapping some traditional Italian seeds. Some of my favourites are tomatoes, sweet peppers and beans etc. I just love the taste of Italian tomatoes, so full of flavour. Pappacella from Naples, sound interesting, are they just grown in that area?

Do you know what your friends are mainly interested in growing/swapping?

this friends love growing vegetable and they grow anything edible and different.. they love the biodiversity and a lot of them are organic gardener and growing with permaculture method ( i say allotment but in italy you can own a piece of land for few money and a lot of them have a summerhouse known as "villa" in the countryside, my uncle bought one for 20.000 euro a villa with 2 bedroom and 3 acre of land with olive trees)... the leader called Angelo in a man that is in charge of the seedbank and is the guy that sent me all that seeds...
this is his blog in italian but you can translate in english and is quite understandable.
plus he have this variety of cuke that are like melon and they call caroselli... they are nothing to compare to the normal cuke. plus other variety of tomatoes end squash... they not only grow and save old heritage variety of italian seeds but they grow other kind of veg from other part of the world...

do you remember when i was talking about the tomatoes that grow without water? considered that i grow them 2 plant per flower bucket i've been only feed them once a week with a diluted tomato feed and pour in it only 1 litre of it... they are left alone and now they are already producing fruits...

I don't want make enemy. That's why I suggest if someone is in charge (I meant a mod) so I can give them more seeds so they can share. I've been so affascinate from growing veg and fruit that big company want you to eat and even grow. Old fashion variety are better stronger and tasteful.

                            here the list

i made small packet of seeds and some of the variety that i didn't have a lot i prefer to make more packet with less seeds...
                            this what i have:

10 packets of tomatoes tondino di galatina, (this is one of the winter tomatoes 10 seeds per packet)
8 packets of tomatoes tondino di barletta, ( winter tomatoes 20 seeds per packet)
7 packets of tomatoes tondino di altamura ( winter tomatoes 15 seeds per packet)
10 packets of tomatoes grappolo d'inverno ( winter tomatoes 10 seeds per packet)
6 packets of tomatoes giallo d'inverno ( winter tomatoes 10 seeds per packet)
6 packets of tomatoes regina di fasano ( winter tomatoes 15 seeds per packet)
10 packets of tomatoes fiaschetto di torre guaceto ( fresh consumption here a link about it:Area Marina Protetta Torre Guaceto: Vegetables and Legumes: Fiaschetto Tomato of Torre Guaceto BIO - Organic Farming Label e Slow Food Presidium
5 packets of papaccella riccia gialla ( 5 seeds per packet)
10 packets of papaccella riccia rossa (6 seeds per packet both nice sweet flavour with a misshape pappers and thick flesh here a link amicidellortodue: Papaccella)
5 packets of pepper cornaletto dolce ( 5 seeds per packet like a big jalapeno pepper but very sweet.. nice to fry and add to tomato as a side)
5 packets of aubergine bianca sfumata rosa (10 seeds per packet here a pics Melanzana Rotonda bianca sfumata di rosa Vendita semi sementi | Larosa Emanuele Sementi
10 packets of aubergine rossa di rotonda ( 6 seeds per packets look like a big tomatoes as you can see in this link amicidellortodue: melanzana di Rotonda)

ok so if you interest on any of this seeds let me know so we can swap with some heritage, heirloom or special variety of any veg...
as you can see i have a lot of winter tomatoes and they have almost the same name but because they come from different area with different soil and different wheater condition ( barletta is grow on the beach of barletta town so is a sandy soil instead altamura is on the hill and the soil is more loam) but they change a bit in shape and taste as you can see the pics on this blog amicidellortodue: Pomodori Pugliesi

so i'm waiting for your list and considered that i don't know much about uk variety i will appreciate if you tell me what is the characteristic of that veg.
                            thanks

I wouldn't worry about that - anyone is free to swap their own seeds as and when.

What I'd do with yours though - as you have different varieties and different numbers, is for people to send you equivalents, and an address label and 2 stamps and you do a first come first served swap.

So if someone sent you 12 packs of seeds that you do want, and they get one pack of each of yours.
If someone just wants say, 3 packs, then they send you 3 equivalent packs that you want and you send them the 3 they wanted.
If they want 5 and there are none left of one, then they get 1 substitute in the 5 they get back.

You could update your thread to say what you have got left and what you want and what you have received and then people will know what's on offer and what they have to do to get swaps!
