Reading Giant Cauliflower

A bit of a long shot...

A workmate was telling me that many years ago he grew a Cauliflower called 'Reading Giant'.

He was telling me stories of how they'd grow 'a foot and a half across' without any looking after, and how they are the only cauli he's ever managed to grow.

Its a while since he has seen them about, possibly 10yrs plus, he used to get them from his uncle 'up north'. My friend is approaching retirement age, there is a chance this could be 20yrs ago.

I was reading a book yesterday (an 80's publication) that mentioned that there was a ruling and many types of seeds with regional names were in fact the same strain and that they had to revert to the original name.

Could this be why I cant find anything on the web regarding this Califlower?

I just came in to see a cauli that could read, or one that was like a book that you could read. And imagining sitting up in bed holding a cauli instead of a book............deranged minds....who mentioned them?

I did find that, along with a couple of other giant varieties.
88 miles from Reading to Leamington Spa... not that that makes a difference! lol

I was just hoping to find some sort of reference to A 'reading Giant'

I'll show him a pic of the Leamington just in case....

I've had a look at the Organic Gardening Catalogue 1988 and they were selling seeds of Leamington Caulis (from 1885) "for April and even May eating". 35p a packet

Haha I moved from Leamington Spa to the outskirts of Reading 4 years ago and had never heard of this. May buy some for myself and my dad as he still lives in the town. Maybe the best thing to of ever come out the town!
