I go seed hunting this weekend, will try all the places people are mentioning (Aldi, Lidl, Wilkinsons).

Premier Seeds look like a great option for me to pick up some of the unusual things I might try at a good price... does anyone have any experience with growing CUCAMELON? I remember seeing these in the newspaper once and there in the ebay store.

        Here's a thread about Cucamelons http://www.growfruitandveg.co.uk/gra...kin_73718.html
They didn't crop enough for me to justify the GH space

Might give them another go this year, failed with them outside last year...

Sound like there not ideal for a newbie. I've already got a big trial to see what works in my shaded area. I have some sunny spots too which I'm going to place hanging tomatoes in, I think this is where I might have some fun with unusual (well for me anyway) options. It will be fun for me to grow yellow and orange tomatoes (probably not new to most people on here!)

I don't have a green house. When I get my seeds, do I get planting them indoors on the windowsill and hope to get them going there until they can go outside?

I've kept mine overwinter since they're supposed to be perennial - early days yet for new shoots

Do you have a propagator or warm hot press Nicola?

Hi. I just wanted to come onto this thread I started as my very first. Since then I have learned a lot and received lots of helpful tips from other users. I am very grateful for everyone's help. Since I last posted on here I did a big seed hunt at all the places mentioned and found lots of good offers at Lidl. Today I placed an order with Premier Seeds Direct on ebay (they have been so busy they even had to shut their shop down for a few days to catch up with orders, so I had to wait before I could checkout with a basket I put together at the start of the week). I used them to get some of the seeds that I wanted but couldn't find in places like Lidi.

This is what I ordered from Premier Seeds Direct:
                  Chamomile (Anthemis nobilis)
                  Mixed lead lettuce
                  Tomato - Current Gold Rush
                  Pak Choi Red
                  Carrot - Rainbow mix
                  Tomato - Dwarf, Tiny Tim
                  Peppermint
                  Tarragon (Russian)
                  Thyme - Purple Creeping
Spinich - Salad Leaves Red Kitten
Italian Purple Spring Onion - Lilia
                  Lambs Lettuce
                  Tomato - Tumbler
                  Basil - Red Rubin
                  -
                  & from another ebay seller:
                  Lemon Balm
                  Strawberry Alexandria Alpine

Out of the seeds I found when I went to places like Lidl a few of them stated indoor sowing this month so I did and I now have some really exciting looking Spring onions, tomatoes, courgettes, carrots, Italian herb mix, chives, and one type of bean growing. I have used windowsill propagators (not heated) I am really happy that they have all germinated so well, I am just waiting to see the tomatoes!

Looking forward to the seed delivery and working out what I can start sowing indoors from this new bunch of seeds. But overall I cant wait to get some outdoor planing done when the time is right.

You're gonna be busy Nicola. You should be able to start your lettuce and carrots now, and radish and Spring onion,(don't remember if they were on your list),if it's not too cold up there.

Hi DottyR, I just mentioned you on my thread about the vertical herb garden. I am looking forward to growing the alpine strawberries you mentioned and have ordered some of them.

Indoors I have some spring onion, carrots, chives, courgettes, italian herb mix, and tomatoes growing. They have all germinated apart from the tomatoes so I'm happy to know that my windowsill is ok to start the plants off on.

The spring onions are getting quite tall now and there are a lot of them, I am a little worried about what to do next re re-potting them. I dont know what size they need to be for this to be a requirement. This was one of the packets that said sprinkle onto the soil, so not like the tomatoes which were placed in holes. I guess its the next thing I will learn about!

I wish you good luck Nicola we have tried to grow strawberries from seed a few times and had little success I think they are initially very slow growing so you more than likely won't get a crop from these until at least next year.

We have started just buying the plants already established now everything else we have we are for for from seed this year :-)

Again good luck and let us know how you go on

                            Justin.

I sowed just a couple of rows last weekend, outside, but under a cloche, not germinated yet, yes you can start some carrots now, but I am in the South, so may be a bit warmer?

Just a thought, Dobbies have Alpine strawberries, in their 'herb section', 6 plants for £10.00, I bought these last year, and they did well.
