where do you get your seeds...

hi just wonderd where people that are a little less fortunate get there seeds at a decent price but with a wide variety? went down to asda, aldi and some local stores today to find not much on offer other than the most popular veg around. where is all the variety at? because b&q are going to be a ridiculous if the price of there tools etc are anything to go by lol

you've missed the main sowing season, which is Mar-April, so the supermarkets aren't going to have much now, in June.

where is all the variety at?

for unusual seeds, you're going to have to go down the garden centre if you have a decent one, or look online.


However, as a new plotholder, I would ask around your site if anyone has anything spare: people are usually only too happy to share

that's a great idea had a little chat with the chap next to me he seems a nice guy but no mention any free seeds haha spoke to a few people on the allotment as I walked around so should be all good

I think you need to keep your eye out for plants now...something that you can get in the ground.

In the last few weeks, due to dire results of my homegrown tomato seedlings, I've bought some large healthy plants from a notice on somebody's gate for pence and a healthy 4 foot monster from the charity shop for £1. I have now taken the side shoots off and got a surplus of plants - some have already got a new home with my sister.

I didn't plant any cabbage seeds this year but mentioned at the allotment that hubby was fancying cabbage for coleslaw and miraculously within the hour cabbage seedlings appeared.

I do have a surplus of other brassicas and they will all be free to good homes around the allotment.

As for my strawberry runners - they have literally been rehomed the length and breadth of the country.

Swopsies are the name of the game.

Also my allotment neighbour and I have an agreement to help ourselves to each others salad crops when one of us has a gap in produce.

Most of my seed I buy for 50p a pack at the end of the season (August Bank holiday) at the local garden centre.

Ask on the allotment if they have a plant sale............you may be lucky & get some given.

And Scarlet, that moreveg site is a cracker and unbelievably cheap! I love the realseed co too, and have found some wonderful old varieties of seed on there but it is more pricey.

Was going to say, Mr Tiler, that many allotments have seed swap opportunities. They may have already done it this year but worth asking around.

You could also save some seed from something that you've sown this year and join the 2014 seed circle! That's much more fun than buying them

I have joined a local allotment club in the north east shire moor whee the opportunity to members are good well costed seeds from the kings range at a third of the price you would pay at a garden centre and sed potatoes £1 a kilo and other gardn materials and fertilisers excellent prices

It is extrmley important that we all support these local club shops where local guys and dolls utilise their spare time and are available to share their knowledge with you on the best seeds grown previously to get the best produce available for you to grow on your patch.

Personally I have saved a fortune over the past three years since being a member of this club.

Ps if a group or allotment is big enough you can arrange your own account with the likes of kings seeds and this will save a small fortune
