      Oo.....I have volunteers Sunflowers and marigolds are off to a good start and I have a squash/courgette just peeping through

        I sowed the beany looking things and a couple of squash yesterday

          Why is it unknown varieties seem to germinate better? 8 out of 8 on the squash/ courgette, 7 out of 7 on the melon/ cue and guess what?..........................one of the cucuzza is now having a peep at the outside world

            Just a quick update. Most of my mystery plants are in their final positions. Just a couple of melon/cues to pot as I think they will struggle in the gh boarders now. I have one cucuzza (touch wood, cross fingers and all that, that a slug doesn't come along and chomp the stem or similar and kill it) Oh and my beans are climbing

              Good to know. Most of my stuff are gone... I have some squash left alive the rest not. I think is gonna be a very poor season this one for me. I can still try again next year.

                I feel all sad now. I will cross my fingers for you things go better. Don't give up the fight.

                I don't know why but they seem stronger and happier than most of my other plants. I know a lot can still happen but they are really quite promising Thank you for sharing them.

                  Don't be sad. Is also my fault as well. I got another plot and I'm working in both site and the fact I have to leave my old small plot I try not to spend much money in something I have to leave so in not spending a lot of time there. Plus this year as been so far rubbish and I only had 2good day off considered that I worked the other good day. Next year baby goes to nursery so I will have more time to spend on my plot and veg. Good job I kept a bit of everything.

                    mine is lil late update, I have moved all seedlings to final positions while ago. the list looks like

                    3 corn plants, many suflowers , 3 beans plants, 3 squash or any, . Lost one seedlind looks like cucumber or melon. (I save all remaining seed to give a better start in next year though

                    Happy to see all the mistery plants looks healthy (these are the only plants I planted into ground with out fail or loosing much)

                      Just another update. All looking good. My squash plants are now starting to sprawl and are a dark green with a white fuzzy veining on the leaf and they are covered with soft fuzz. So I wandered round the patch and garden, seeing what they were similar to and the nearest was some butternut squash plants (from franchi seed) so my guess is butternut (hopefully, I have 8 plants ).

                      My borlottis are 3ft with pretty mauve flowers and some teeny skinny pods. Have had a few marigold flowers. The cue/ melons are about a foot tall and no flowers in sight yet. My only pepper plant is about one foot tall and now starting to flower. Hopefully, I will get some pics on soon.

                      How are everyone elses doing?

                        Ok, the one I thought was cucuzza is looking more like bottle gourd I have had a gurgle and I have found a bit that says they are edible when they are young but nothing that says about how to cook them. Anyone got any experience of bottle gourds, even drying them out to use as bottles

                          Cucuzza and bottle gourd are in fact the same species, Lagenaria siceraria. I've never grown or cooked one, but I found a site here all about them, complete with recipes and a cucuzza song

                            Silly question but when things are the same species would that have any bearing on being edible or not? As I say I found one reference and that was it

                              Probably not always, but in this case the main difference appears to be in the shape. They seem to be all edible when young, or they can be juiced, or when mature and hard are used for making containers, musical instruments etc. Like cucumbers, you sometimes get a bitter one which could be poisonous if you ate a lot of it, so try a small taste first.

                              You might have more luck searching under alternative names. Calabash is a general name for them all and there's a Wikipedia article about them here https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Calabash

                              But they have lots of local names in different parts of the world, e.g. in India they are called Dudi or Lauki and are used to make curries.
