  • Polytunnel direction?

I've spent the last wee while overthinking again and I now can't see the woods for the trees.

My house is in the middle of a housing scheme so it has other houses all round it which cast shade. There's really only 2 places where a tunnel could go and get some sun.

If you imagine a clock face, South is where 1 is and West is where 4 is. (Obviously North is 7 and East is 10.) My house has the 4 corners corresponding to N,S,E,W etc.

So my options are to have the (6mx3m) polytunnel door at 12 o'clock walking into the tunnel heading down to 6 o'clock or 3 o'clock walking across to 9 o'clock. A kind of reversed 'L' shape.

Either way there will be a bit of shade cast both ways depending on the time of day but it's probably pretty even in hours of sun per day in total.

Help? Which way should I put it?

I should add both ways will mean one side of it going beside a fence

In my opinion, it depends on the direction of your strongest winds. I always think you want the wind to hit your tunnel at an angle rather than directly at the side or front of it.

Here's a link to the Google Map of our site with my polytunnel being the one that looks like it has the cross on the top.

To use your clock example, the prevailing strong wind comes from the south west which is at about 8 o'clock. So you can see that the wind glances off it.
    Are y'oroight booy?

        Thanks both.

I have no idea which way the wind hits my garden, it just seems windy all over. I shall have to investigate.
