2nd Hand Greenhouse repairs

I'm about to put up a second hand greenhouse but I've noticed the rubber strips between the glass pane and frame are either missing or very perished. Is there a quick and cheap way of replacing it? I thought about using silicone but haven't an idea how effective it would be.

Also I've built a base 1 course of concrete blocks. Will attaching the greenhouse to this be enough to stop it blowing away on an allotment? I have visions of turning up one day to find my greenhouse on my neighbour’s roof.

Hi Mutley, You can buy the rubber strip from NA Kays or Two wests. They are both on the web.

As for your base, I hope it will be OK cos both of mine are fatened to brieze blocks!!!

Did'nt think of that SBP. I was thinking of the rubber strip BUT if it helps, why not!

If you are like me and cant wait (put ours up this week and had the same problem) you can use 'E' type strip that you can get at Homebase or B&Q. Sticky on one side so stays put when you put the glass in.

Thinking about it, you could use a bead of Silicon. But don't make it too big & make sure t's set just incase you need to get the glass out

try the door frame draught excluder strip you can get large rolls of it from most DIY shops and it doesnt stick to the glass and being foam has shock absorbing properties and cushions the glass.

my 8 x 6 greenhouse is screwed to 4" timber posts with a floor between these made up of bricks in a herringbone pattern. its in a windy site so i have driven a metal spike down through each corner into the soil and filled all gaps with a dry mortar mix that was watered in and set its screwed every 12" with 2 and a half inch screws. overkill some might say but at least its still standing after several storms.

That was what i was suggesting but got the spelling wrong. Draught excluder, not the sausage type stuffed with old tights.
