  • Fruit Veg Growing Pants

    My Tomatoes, Cucumbers and Courgettes this time last year were growing brilliant but this year here in cloudy skies Newcastle they are rubbish and have around one Tomato and nothing else. Yeah they are growing big and have flowers but that's about it :-(

    Anyone else?

      Tomatoes doing Ok in greenhouse (though not had any yet) but tender plants outside are very poor this year. Squash, courgette and sweetcorn only just starting to move. I think I was spoiled by the really hot June onwards last year. In future, will protect them a bit better early on.
      Other crops are better than last year. garlic and onions looking good and the early and second early potatoes are giving over 2lb per root. Peas are just filling the pods. They are a bit more shaded than I would like, hurst greenshaft plants are 4' plus tall. We've had a few cabbage as well. Plenty of raspberries (none last year) and a few lb. of strawberries. So plenty to eat, just a different diet to last year.

        Apart from spinach going to seed, everything else is doing fine.
        Location....East Midlands.

          I just had to drop in and see what was going on here. Best thread title yet!

          I'm very behind, so most things are still at that optimistic green stage. My French beans started off well, but the heat has done for them. Very sad as I had high hopes for one of the varieties.

            My plants are behind last years.....but getting there. Every year I get different weather and pest challenges and some things do better than others. I just try to plant a wide variety in the hope that something will do well.

              The greenhouse is doing well, not much ready yet, just spring onions, lettuce and Strawberries grown inside to get a bit earlier crop, tommies all covered in flowers and some marble sized fruits appearing. Chillies all covered in fruit and flowers and we have had a couple. Butternut squash just flowering, small cukes forming and the sweetcorn is approaching the top of the side panes. Most of what I am growing is different varieties from last year, so hard to do a direct comparison.

                Might have to put shading up...

                New greenhouse - donated by a neighbor in January. Now getting a bit warm for tomatoes. Melons and aubergines seem happy as Larry though.

                Blue is air temperature among tomato foliage and green is bed temperature at about 40mm depth. (bed is warmed with heating cable, which cuts out at 19C)

                May try just shading the tomato end.

                I live in a part of the UK with very mild winters. Please take this into account before thinking "if he is sowing those now...."

                  My tomatoes where probably a couple of weeks behind from normal. But producing well now. My tender crops outside have been struggling though

                  As for these pants that you can grow fruit and veg in. I've met a few people that probably owned a few pair. But no idea where they would of got them from lol

                  Sorry could not resist :}

                    I'm getting loads of flowers and the tomatoes but this time last year sure I had much more and bigger for that matter. My Courgettes are def not doing good outside like they had last year and even the Strawberries don't seem as big or ripe as last years. Def not as good as last year so I'll be lucky to get any tomatoes.
