  • Newbie greenhouse question(s)

I want a greenhouse for my allotment
Have some pretty stupid initial questions if you would indulge me

    1 Polycarbonate or glass
    2 Heater or not
3 Any recommendations as to particular design or make
4 Do I put it onto paving slabs or a metal base frame and do i anchor it to base
5 Do I just have a walkway of paving down the middle and good soil either side to cultivate in ?

    Sorry for basic questions

    Paul

I don't have an allotment but I do have several GHs!

    1. Depends on how safe your plot is from vandalism. You don't want to deal with broken glass.
    2. I don't heat the GHs. What would you use for power?
    3. No - whatever's free!
    4. Several threads about how to construct a base
    5. Look at the photos on the View from GH door thread for ideas. https://www.growfruitandveg.co.uk/gr...-a_100649.html

Can't answer all but for the ones I can
My site doesn't allow glass so check - I'd personally live with the maybe slightly less performant poly just to not have to worry so much about ssafety (my plot is especially windy so glass would blow out a lot)

Heater - I don't bother but I might lose my greenhouse at home so maybe - I'd say perhaps get something second hand and just use it feb/march/april to prolong the season

3 -dunno - I'd go for freecycle first though I'm known for being cheap and DIY - if you've got the money rhino are a good brand so I've heard

whatever base you choose you'll need to anchor it - metal base might give you some extra headheight

I went for pavingslabs downt the middle with soil either side (yet to be seen whether its good soil - probabloy ok-ish at the moment, needs added compost etc) as its a new build

      good luck

questions weren't too basic (and even if they were no-one here minds). expect to get some contrary opinions now, as thats the way it works
