  • What Do People Think To This

I need your honest opinions as to this Polytunnel: Greenhouse 3.5MX2M LARGE Walk-In Green Garden Hot House on eBay, also Greenhouses, Garden Structures Fencing, Garden Plants, Home Garden (end time 09-Jan-08 12:38:59 GMT)

I am thinking of getting one of these instead of what i was talking about the other day.

I had a similar thing to this last year. The construction was slightly different (more of a 'traditional' greenhouse shape) but same covering, vent style etc. It wasn't new when I got it (gift from a kind neighbour) so I don't know how old it was but it only lasted me the one season. The main problem was stability in the wind - I weighted it down with paving slabs and it did stay put, mostly, but the flip side of that was that the cover really strained against the frame and eventually started to split. It died a complete death in the last high winds we had.

HOWEVER... for the price, I still think the one you linked to is great. If mine had been used for (say) two years already plus the year I got from it, that's only about £20 a year for a decent growing space. I seriously considered buying one every few years instead of the 'permenant' greenhouse I eventually invested in.

It looks rubbish to me and the bloke in front must be a midget! Can't argue with the price though at £69 delivered.

I hope someone has had one from new and can give you a better idea of it's worth!

PS Well you did ask for an honest opinion!

my friend on my allotment got on last september and it is still up it is dug in deep with wood along the sides so you will lose some height. Where out site is we get some strong winds and it is rigjt in the path of these, I will say again that it has been dug in deep don't know if it would have lasted if not, I fancy ony one and am watching ebay.

Lidl did a cold frame made of the same stuff it lasted one season before the plastic disintergrated just leaving the mesh,

I think you would be wiser to invest your pennies elsewhere - and I would begin by suggesting you have a close look at Pigletwillies DIY polytunnel on this very forum. Cheap as chips and a lot lot sturdier.

Lol! I hadn't noticed the dubious authenticity of the photo! I *am* a midget, so it was fine for me

The bloke on the plot opposite me put one of these up in the autumn, the next day I had to trespass on his plot to pull the cover back on while the plot secretary rang him to come & sort it out. this morning I went to check my greenhouse, as we had high, gusting winds last night. Mine is fine, but his is flapping around wildly, almost in 2 pieces, with the fella & his missus frantically trying to hold it down & gaffer tape it together.... One shouldn't laugh...but...
If you really want to save money, and buy new but cheap, I would heartily recommend a Norfolk 'Standard' greenhouse - they are a normal greenhouse shaped frame, but you cover them with rolls of plastic stuff, leaving long tails to be buried in the ground similar to a polytunnel. I've had one in my garden for 2 years, & it's never budged an inch, the allotment one has been up for 6 months, and similarly hasn't moved an inch. Initially they're a bit like a Meccano set, but definately worth the money. (12ft - £130) (Unlike their Ultimate models, which are pants with a capital P)

                        Hi Guys

Thanks for the info SarzWix. I've looked at the link and they describe it as having rigid plastic panels, not rolls of placcy. Did you just get the frame and cover it yourself? Or did you just decide not to use the rigid stuff? £130 seems reasonable to me!

I've been reading this with great interest as me and my OH have now got a lottie which needs sooo much work (we've been told it's been fallow for approx 18 years...

Anyway, I've been wanting to get a greenhouse but haven;t much money (have any of us )

The Standard model frames are identical to the Ultimate models, but have a single sliding door and are clad in the original proven Norfolk Greenhouses manner with flexible PVC sheeting and sealed with transtape. All models have a rear opening window.
The green house comes with plenty of the "PVC Sheeting" (rolls of plastic!), so there's some left over afterwards. As has been mentioned before, they aren't quick to put together (bit like Meccano), but my none-DIY-minded hubby managed to put ours together

I have an 8 foot by 6 foot aluminium greenhouse with no glass in it! Do you think they would sell me the cover material alone with the sealant tape and instructions?
