  • New Greenhouse

Hi Everyone! Just came across this forum after doing a few weeks of research into doing more vegtable growing in my garden.

Anyway, the long and short of it (so far) is that I have decided to get a greenhouse. I have a decent space at the end of the garage which will allow a 6x8 sized greenhouse.

So, after trawling the interweb, there are two that fit into my budget (£350 or so).

    They are:

6 X 8 Greenhouse With Polycarbonate INCLUDES BASE - DIY and Tools from DIYTools.co.uk - Your First Stop For All Things DIY !

    or:

    8 x 6 Popular 86 Aluminium Greenhouse - Tesco.Direct

The key differences being one is branded (the tesco one - Halls) and the type of glazing (the other being Polycarbonate).

Now considering the current windy weather, I'm thinking the glass one will be heavier and therefore more stable. However, the safety of Polycarbonate is tempting, although there is more risk with it being an "unknown" brand I suppose.

Anyone have any thoughts on this? I want to order fairly soon so that I can get it built and working asap!

    Thanks,

    Eric

    Welcome to the Grapevine Esrikandan.

I was going to suggest that as one is 8x6 and the other 6x8, you should choose the one that fits your space. Not very helpful though, is it?

I think I'd go for the Tesco option. Halls is a reliable brand, and glass will let more light through than polycarbonate.

Just a quick thought - if you look in your local paper and on sites like freecycle, you might find a free second-hand greenhouse offered by someone who no longer wants theirs. I've had two this way; you just have to take them apart yourself.

      Hi Paul,

Thanks for the swift reply. I think they are both the same size and aspect (6ft wide, 8ft deep).

Like you, I suspect the safety of a well known brand is desirable. The greenhouse is actually a birthday pressie from family, although I have looked at fleabay and the local paper to no avail. I also only have a tiny car, so factoring hiring a van and other bits and pieces to replace missing / broken I don't think there's much in it.

        Palram Silverline Polycarbonate Glazed Greenhouse

This place are doing them for £269 6x8 - You can add on a shelf kit and another vent, it then comes in at around £310.

I've just bought one but can't comment on quality as I hav'nt put it up yet.
