Second Hand Greenhouse

Support needed please.

I had in mind this year to buy some of those plastic tent like propogators and I thought how ever many I get wont be enough. Cant afford a new greenhouse but have been looking on ebay and have seen a 6ftx4ft one.

Any cons with a second hand one?

I thought about buying second hand before I took the plunge and bought new. The main issue seemed to be that you really need to take lots of pics and label/number every last bit, or you may never get it back together!

Is it the one that's full of kids toys? Looks good for the current price.

My first greenhouse was second hand and I loved it! However, I did have a slight advantage in that it was being got rid of by the hotelier next door but one - the house next door to ours was being converted into flats, and the hotelier and they had lots of builders in. Therefore they just took out all the glass, and then lifted it bodily over the fence, across the next door garden and over the fence into our garden. You do need several willing builders and some surplus bottles of beer for this procedure to run smoothly, but half a crate of beer was our only cost! I then went round and got the glass later!

Joking apart, the only thing we had to contend with was replacing panes of glass which were cracked. If we had had to dismantle it completely, it might not have survived the journey (all 100ft of it!). The one you're looking at may be in better nick than mine was, but do make sure it's obvious what goes where (if you see what I mean) otherwise you'll never get it back together!

NSB - just found it (I think) if it's the one I think it is, ask if you can view asap and if they'd accept a cash offer on the spot. I know it's not how ebay is supposed to work but they sound keen to sell and be rid.

Both our greenhouses are second hand, )Friday Adz / Freecycle - both were free), the 10' by 8' on plot 1 and the 6' by 8' in the back yard! You have to be lucky to drop on them for nowt, and its a right royal PITB moving one, a full day to dismantle and label, major problems moving (the 10' was tied to the roof of a Fiat Panda with Lee's belt and string and then driven 10 miles to its new home on plot1), but definitely worthwhile!

As for re-errecting, take time to ensure the foundations are well footed, perfectly level and totally secure, after that, they arent too difficult, after you've done one or two!

am i better buying one that I can dismantle rather than already dismantled

My greenhouse is second hand too and I love it. I had quite a few breakages dismantling when taking out the glass, but the previous plotholder had left sheets of glass in the shed so I was able to do running replacements. Picking up some sheets of perspex via freecycle helped me finish the roof off.

I found that dismantling it myself made it easier to get it back up again

I'd say so, yes NSB! That way you get to see where everything fits, and can label it all up before you dismantle it, and decide which bits you are going to leave assembled (if you have room to move them partially assembled!)

Make sure you take spanners, pliers, hammer, screwdrivers, gloves, WD40 and oil with you, along with a permanent marker and refreshments tho!
