Paving slabs as bed edging

I'm claiming my garden lawn to make way for more veggie beds and am most certain I will use paving slabs (18x18" cut into half) as they're one of the cheapest alternative and I think they would be wide enough to prevent the grass from invading the beds. Any thoughts on this? The slabs are only £1.82 each from a local wholesale type build merchant and will be cut in half.

Sounds OK, but they will need to be sunk into the ground both to keep them stable, and to prevent grass and weeds invading underneath them. Are you sure this is the cheapest alternative? Have you tried Freecycle for free used slabs or wood?

Thats what i did last oct, took 1/2 the lawn in back garden to make a veggie plot, put some small raised beds in and some weed fabric round beds for a chip bark path way, it looks neat & tidy.
paving sounds good but its what you will be happy with.

How are you going to gut the slabs in half? Might be a job and a half...!

if you cant pick any up from freecycle what about ebay or your local ads, will cost you a lot less for s/h ones

I'm sure we'll make sure to lay the slabs properly, nothing like sloppy quality of work. I've given up on Freecycle, the only time I do well is when I'm giving away expensive stuffs .

DH says can use an angle grinder, whatever that is . Guess he knows what he's talking about.

I don't mind paying a little extra for a nice looking slab because I want the garden to look attractive. I couldn't possibly get the sort (e.g. York Riven Buff) I want from freecycle or local ads etc and besides the total cost would still only be just under £10 . I'm just surprised not many Grapes are into pretty slabs as they can not just be very attractive but also cheap and much more permanent/lasting.

Evening veg4681 i think they will look most attractive, and as an added bonus will last a very long time.
