  • Bit of advice from you clever chappies ...

    ... regarding Polytunnels.

I'm due to take ownership of a 30ft tunnel in the next two weeks ( I did tell Mrs G it was a birthday pressie for her but she said something off ..didn't catch the first word). Any advice would be greatly appreciated as it's the 1st one I've put up.

        Don't choose a windy day !

Seriously, it's quite straightforward although the instructions with mine looked rather daunting. Took 3 weekends altogether, digging the trenches to bury the plastic sides was more work than we realised. We probably could have done with another pair of hands too, so bribe a couple of friends to help....

My experiences with greenhouses and covers for Chrysanthemum is it doesn't matter how calm a day it is, the minute you start the wind gets up !

And the poly tunnels quite big too

It won't be all for veggie stuff Protea, I think it's 6ft between uprights so 12 foot will be for some of the overflow of cacti freeing up a bit of space in the big Greenhouse and probably the little on as well.

I've got to measure up this weekend and then order it on Monday and I can have it by next weekend. so it will either be 30' x 10'6" or 30' x 12' ... can't remember how wide the lottie is.

Then I've got to build some staging in there to take all the cacti, empty the little g/h dig out the base, replace with hardcore, concrete over the top leaving 1 bed, move as much as possible back in from the big g/h and do the same in there only with 2 beds in. once I've moved the hardcore dig a bed over at home and concrete a path down the bottom of the garden whilst taking chrysanth, dahlia, fuchsia and geranium cuttings and sowing veggie and bedding plant seed ... simple eh
