  • Another plastic greenhouse disaster!!

A few weeks ago there was a big fight between a wind storm and my plastic hexagonal greenhouse. The wind won and my greenhouse is dead.

However, I've still got all the metal poles undamaged and (at the risk of sounding extremely tight) I thought i could use these to make extra staging or perhaps somehow make cold frames (if anything, just to lessen the emotional trauma of it all ). Most of the plastic things to join the poles together have snapped though and the ones that haven't snapped are angled to make the hexagonal shape so are not much use to me.

What I need help with is... does anyone know what these plastic joint things are officially called and are they things one can buy separately?? I can't find them anywhere.

Or if anyone has any bright ideas what to do with a load of metal poles i'd be most interested to hear them.

    Many thanks

I use the metal poles and shelving from those mini-greenhouses as staging - they're cheaper to buy than 'proper' greenhouse staging. Unfortunately i have the same problem - mine didn't blow apart, but i did dismantle them when my greenhouse had to be moved, and i now have too many poles and not enough plastic bits!

I don't think you can buy spares to be honest, they're cheap as chips to make so i suspect they would want you to buy a new one rather than fix a broken one.

Is there anything you can do to attach the poles together without the plastic bits - are they all broken beyond repair?

You maybe able to join the metal rods together using metal plumbing joints if the metal is the same size as copper pipe? The link shows what I mean, hope it works

i am the same when it comes to reusing things like that but to be honest they are that cheap nowadays its cheaper to buy a new one than it is to mess about trying to repair it or make something new out of it

Found something that may interest you!

          Hi there,

Not sure if you still need these but i got a leaflet through with grow your own from Harrod Horticultural. They are called "build-a-ball" and they cost 12.95 for a pack of 12, a bit pricey but look a lot easier that getting your fingers wrapped up in tape!

build a balls are available on ebay from fruit cage people- you could probably do something with jubilee clips and small metal angles which are sold for joining wood in DIY stores- they are cheap too.
