I have turned into a scavenger!!!!!

why didnt people warn me that when I get an alottment I turn into a some kind of scavenger???

There is a company by me on an industrial site which quite often has pallets outside with a big notice 'free palletts' I saw them yesterday lunch time but felt too embarassed to actually stop. At about 8 last night when it was dark I told my son to help me go and get some! I managed to fit three in my car so will have to go back and get another 1 0r 2 as I want to make a compost bin for our lottie! Even though the sign said 'take me' I still felt a bit like I was stealing or scavenging!!!

don't worry about this part of allotment building atlleast your son helped you as my children run a mile at the thought.
i look in skips , front gardens and even asked the neighbours to keep there rabbits / guinea pigs bedding for me much to my daughters disgust but as i explained if you get it free then it makes the veg growing experance cheaper.
you can also save dog bones after they have finished with them put them in a fire and ground them with a hammer.
look at other peoples scrap / junk as useful items and it won't cost a lottie to build your lottie and then you really get the cheap veg.

Next door but one to me just had her bathroom done so I asked her for the old bath to turn into a mini pond to attract some frogs etc

Yo Mrs B, Only another 1 or 2? You need at least 7 to make 3 decent bins, then there's staging, gates, fences, a potting table...... the posibilities are endless. Know anyone with a truck?

I never pass an oportunity to 'salvage' - I have picked up large pieces of timber when out walking the dog, never pass a skip without looking in and have rescued countless bits for the lotment! - my wife calls me uncle Bulgaria ..... I wonder why?

It's amazing what people will throw away - I had about £40 worth of timber out of a skip at the weekend. Lots of brand new, unused 3m lengths of 2byfour! It was a hotel refit and the builder obviously couldn't be bothered to save it.

I always ask the owner before skip diving (unless it's very dark...) but it's surprising how often people ask for money! Maybe that's just Colchester though. My view is, you're making more room in the skip for them!

Once had it work the other way though - I booked a skip for a house I was doing up and overnight someone chucked their 3-piece suite in it!

I took a load of cardboard (for mulch) ourt of a skip at my kids school and my eldest daughter refused to walk home with me!

Once had it work the other way though - I booked a skip for a house I was doing up and overnight someone chucked their 3-piece suite in it!

WE never have an over night skip, just because of this type of thing.

As an aside just after Christmas i went to my local bottle bank to discover somebody had tried to stuff a deceased real Christmas tree into one of those bottle holes...!

I love a skip, the dump, especiaslly the bins at the garden centre they throw away all the torn bags of compost. My OH and closest friends call me Steptoe!! Not sure which one they mean though
