  • Homemade cloche

Has anyone devised a way to make some sort of cloche out of the heavy duty clear poly bags things like potato planters come in?

Depends what you want to use the cloche for Brooklynodog. You could try putting the bag over a couple of wire hoops. The best cloche/cold frame I've seen was one in a Geoff Hamilton programme - and I think the idea's been resurrected in the current issue of GYO (Alloment feature).

I saw the cloche building on GW last night...it's just what we need for next year's brassicas and I'm going to be making one or two out of the fine mesh. I love a woodwork project!

Years ago I made cloches using clear polythene by cutting lengths of wire netting (1" mesh) to the size of the arch I wanted plus 4".

Lay these onto clear poly and fold over the edge twice (you need to leave a bit of slack in the polythene to allow it to fit over the netting when you bow it over) to lock the polythene onto the netting.

You now have a semi-rigid cloche.

The ends I made in the same way making flat plates with all 4 edges folded over.

Cut lengths of heavy duty galvanised wire, bend the ends over like a hook to peg them down.

The end plates hold in place with canes.
I am certain that the day my boat comes in, I'll be at the airport.
