The soil in some of my trays in the greenhouse is going a dark bottle green on the top. Is this a fungus and if so can I treat it. Could I have watered it too much or not given enough ventilation (although reluctant to open window due to cold weather at moment.

It's caused by over-watering. Be a little harsher!Whoever plants a garden believes in the future.

If you have seedlings in this soil you may get damping off disease, where they rot off at the base.
Try to ventilate for at least an hour or so, if too cold just keep the door ajar.
This used to happen to me all the time, I learnt the lesson the hard way having to throw away and start again.

All may not be lost. Ease up on the watering and ventilate if you possibly can. I always water my pots and trays in the greenhouse by standing them in a large tray containing water (and sometimes soluble fertiliser). Just leave them to soak up enough to keep them growing. The green stuff doesn't usually do any harm to bigger seedlings.
