  • Sewing insect protection mesh

Have any budding seamstresses or tailors successfully sewed pieces of insect protection mesh (Enviromesh, Wondermesh etc) ??

I really can't think of a better way to make a cover to fit a frame - rather than to drape - but I am not sure our old sewing machine will do the job.

I want to cut rectangular panels and sew velcro onto the joining edges These will stick together, in theory, to make a box structure which can be supported by canes or similar. At least one velcro opening will allow the easy access which is normally a problem with crop covers (or am I lazy!).

Perhaps I should start with fleece (cheaper!) and experiment!

Just wondering if anyone else has had a go.

You've got no chance of sewing fleece CC, It'll come apart in your hand methinks!

I have my enviromesh over my wooden raised bed I use for carrots. Built a wire frame work from fencing wire about 2 foot high and draped the enviromesh over the top. Secured one side permanently and the other side with has an odd small staple knocked in to keep it tight. This year I am gong to put a long metal rod on the opening side which I should be able to open like a roller blind!

It would be an easy matter to use a darning needle with fishing line if you really felt you had to sow it though!

      Yeah it's a bit optimistic isn't it.

I'm just trying to maximise the use of the enviromesh - you know how expensive it is.

I was planning to do the same Cutecumber, but haven't got round to it yet, so will prob end up draping it instead. You are right about it being expensive. Have you tried net curtains. That's easily sown and I know some people use it.

I have tried nets in the past but they were more dense than the mesh and things got too hot.

you can sow it if your careful and put your machine foot on the lowest pressure setting. It would also help if you can to use a zig zag stitch ( allows for the stretch) - hope it helps

I might have a very quick go and see - thanks for your advice.
