Hot in the greenhouse!

Lads at work have just skipped raided for me, three masive bags of the netting that is put around scaffolding which will be brilliant for something, possiable greenhouse shading or keeping birds off my strawberries, can't wait to get home to open the bags!

Well I bit the bullet and painted on the shading today, had to use an old vileda mop out of the garage to reach the top panes though. Hope it comes off easily. 38 degrees in the greenhouse with the door and window wide open so hope this will make a difference.

My greenhouse was 43 today thought i's put my orchids in there the other day and have scorched the lot.

Had a lie in and got up at 9. Straight out to G/house and P/tunnel for dressing gown check. 42C and my peppers were going limp despite being in watering trays

35 degrees in mine at 8.50 am, glad I put the shading on yesterday.

Getting up to 46 in mine, so yesterday traipsed to the garden centre and got shading.

Put it on where the previous shading had been (it'd been neglected and was foul with moss and goo), hope the plants thank me for it...

Now up to 50, even with shading. Trouble is there is no breeze at all!

I suggest you Don't water your carpet, perhaps sit in a bath of ice cubes with a beverage of your choice

the same here,almost 50,with everything open and shading,and damping down,phew
was just thinking,as hot air rises,wonder if it would make much difference in temperature if green houses were made with more roof vents/openings,especially if we can expect this heat more often

My greenhouse peaked at 52 degrees on Thursday, so I bought some vents to go in the back and it has settled to 42 degrees when its hot...........i nearly fainted after being in there for a couple of minutes.

mine is an 8x6,vents,door,roof window,and door open,painted with coolglass on the south side and fleece on the east & west,the north side is 2/6in from a fence so is shaded,will have to come up with something else,in a few weeks it'll be cold again,hehehe,cannot win

One bit of advice - when the temperature rises keep everything - seedlings and all - down as low as you can, i.e. on the ground in trays. I find - simple physics made real - that it is a little cooler at ground level. Put as many trays of water around as you can, too - the evaporation and extra humidity is helpful.

Having said all that, I took EVERYTHING (all plants) out of the greenhouse yesterday. You can tell things aren't right when the plants refuse to take up water - they basically shut down.

Remember that pollen from tomatoes effectively dies above 40 degrees so you can find problems with fruit setting - they much prefer a temperature in the 20's.

Forgot to open my mini greenhouse this morning - luckily LadyWayne is at home today, so I just called and she's going to open it for me. phew, hope it'll be ok.
