  • Walk in plastic greenshouse

    Hi,

Unfortunately, I don't have a proper greenshouse, hopefully one day I will make it on the property ladder and get myself one.

I have never grown veg in winter but I do have one of those 4x6 walk in plastic greenhouses and I am thinking of using bubblewrap to insulate it through winter and autumn. Does anyone know if there is any point in doing this? Any problems that you can foresee which I don't? Only have a small 3x3 raised bed and usually grow things in containers. Was thinking of growing spinach, and lettuce in the bed and something in the insulated greenhouse, but what?

    Hope this all makes sense.

I would have thought that any veg that can survive the winter and keep growing would be OK in a plastic mini-greenhouse without any extra insulation, unless we get a really nasty frost (which is very rare). The bubblewrap might even be counter-productive, since it would cut light levels. I would grow lamb's lettuce, chicory and winter-hardy spring onions in the raised bed, and lettuce and other CCA leaves in the greenhouse...

I have a plastic greenhouse thingy. When I started off my seeds in the spring I used bubblewrap at night only to protect the seedlings from overnight frosts. I just draped the stuff up over the inside horizontal bars and down over the shelves. Worked a treat!!
I am considering using mine as a hotbed this winter.......

I have one of these for the first time this year, and am a bit worried about how well things will fair over the winter, but hey, we shall try it and see, I am also considering getting another one, and bodging them together to double the size, should be an interesting experiment, and only a tenner loss if i have to keep them as two seperate ones ( a tenner to replace the cover).

thing is i have a tiny garden, and at least these can be dismantled and moved around easily.
