My New Greenhouse

After saving up for a long time I have just put up a new greenhouse. It was a loooooong and not an easy job. It took several weeks (About 10 weeks) not helped by the fact that it was the wettest August in 2008 in 175 years and one of the wettest summers ever recorded over here in Dublin.

The greenhouse is a Rhino 8x16 and the garden faces south but unfortunately I have to cope with some large Laylandi trees in a neighbours garden on the south side. I have attached a few pictures at various stages of construction for anyone who may be interested.

I plan to grow (In pots) 1 apricot in a 20 inch pot 1 Peach in a 20 inch pot and 1 fig in a 12 inch pot. I have read that these can go out into the garden in the summer to free up the greenhouse for tomatoes cucumbers mellons chillies and some sweetcorn. It already seems small

I want to get maximum use from it so I will be sowing some winter lettuce this week and anything else that will grow during the autumn and winter. I will check out some of the archived posts on the forum to see what other people are planting now.

A neighbour across the road used to grow vegetables commercially to supplement his income. He has a huge garden (About one acre) and although he is retired a while now he still has about half an acre under glass and grows all sorts of fruit and veg just for his personnel use. He tells me he used to have it all under glass!! Heating and electricity included.

In his commercial days he used to get up at 4.30am to pick and wash several hundred lettuce and cabbages ready for an early start at the market.

Before I start planting does anyone know is it a good idea to dig in some manure or compost to the border soil?

It looks great, good luck with the winter planting. Our rhino arrives on thursday and should be up by the end of the weekend.

We are going to plant Lettuce Winter Gen & Winter Density, Chives, Radish 'Amethyst', Spring Onion 'White Lisbon Winter Hardy', Cauliflower 'Snowball A', Pack Choi 'Green Revolution F1', Turnip 'Golden Ball' and 'Purple Top Milan'.

Galileo, how is it going with the new glassouse, any up dates?

I am having great fun in the greenhouse. I have a lot of Winter lettuce and spring onions in there at the moment. Growth is slow as temperatures are low.

I love just going out and pottering around in it especially when it is cold windy and raining outside

I have double dug the borders which took a long time and several weeks doing about one hour per day. The soil was very compacted so I took my time and went as deep as I could go and added a lot of manure to make the beds ready for the spring and tomato planting.

All in all I am very pleased as I have wanted a greenhouse for years its a wonderfull hobby!

How are you getting on with your new Rhino??

The greenhouse looks fantastic Galileo. I don't think it will be too shaded by those conifers. It's great to work in a greenhouse when it's cold and windy outside. Enjoy.

Sorry for the lateness of the reply, I haven't logged on for a while.
The Glasshouse installation, went relatively smoothly it took the installers two days. Then two return visits as two of the side panels arrived marked and the glazing strips in the roof did not form a water tight seal. I think it took about a month to resolve and kind of took the shine of it a little. I don’t rate the benching that was supplied the wooden slats are all about 15mm to short so rattle backwards and forwards, wish I had gone for the integral stuff.

I did start a few things off nevertheless, but feel they are a little leggy, so intend to invest in some 150w grow lights and a few hotbox units that contain red led’s to see if it makes a difference. Will probably restart January with light and heat.

Glad you’re enjoying the glasshouse and have some crops underway.

I saw in another post you are experiencing problems with your new Rhino.

You mentioned leaks I have had no problems with my new Rhino of any kind there are no leaks even though there has been heavy driving rain several times since being put up.

Did the people who put it together do a bad job?? Was the base level and square?? I did the work myself as you can see from the pictures it took a long time (several weeks) but I did the best job I could every step of the way.

I checked with Rhino about having a dwarf wall and they did not recommend it as I ordered the flush door model and it wouldn't work. If you need a dwarf wall you might need to get a greenhouse from another manufacturer.
