  • Cracked Glass

    Hello there

Has anyone found a decent way to repair cracked panes of glass? I wondered if it might be possible to use a particular tape or glue. Perhaps I am being a little tight but my peach tree grew at an enormous rate this year, pushed out and cracked 4 panes. Several others have little wear and tear cracks. Any ideas veggies.

I have several cracked panes on my greenhouses, all i do is swap any that are on the roof for ones low down on the sides and use extra clips either side of the crack, a strip of duck tape on the inside also helps add a bit of strength. it helps also to try to keep the repaired panes on the leeward side if you have such a thing. sometimes though you just have to bite the bullet and get new panes - try freecycle or similar

Thanks for that Lottie and Kernowyon. Lootie do not worry the only person the glass might fall on is me. Good idea K about swapping roof panes with sides.

        Thanks

what you need is clear elephant tape (bit like clear duck tape) Focus sell it but the cost of the tape is about the cost of a pane of glass I think so it may be just as cheap to buy new. There's a place on e-bay that sells 2 x 2 and 4 x 2 plastic sheets - maybe it may be worth you replacing some f the roof with this and then you'll have spare sheets for the sides and you won't have the problem of dirt in the bit where the glass laps over then.

We bought some polytunnel repair tape with our new tunnel and it works brilliantly on the greenhouse glass too.

You can get special glass tape (try "thegreenhousewarehouse" - I think they have an ebay shop) - this is UV resistant so doesn't go brown and curl up like normal tape does.

Your local glass merchant may be able to do you cut to size greenhouse glass panes for only a few £ per panel if you have any past redemption. However, I understand the price of glass has gone up recently so you may want to check before chucking out your old broken ones.

If you're really worriedabout splinters etc. and can find a cheap source of sticky backed plastic, you can always use that to hold it together.
