  • -4 in greenhouse!

-4 in my unheated greenhouse last night!

Needless to say my two chillis left out as an experiment didn't survive.

Please ignore everything I say, I make it up as I go along, not only do I generally not believe what I write, I never remember it either.

Yikes!...pity about the chilli plants - it might cheer you up a little to know mine's in the kitchen and I'm having to rinse off the greenfly , and wipe the window and sill daily from their sticky mess

Mine might last a couple of weeks at this rate.....( euthanasia is ok with plants is it????)

everything in my garden is horizontal ..... haven't looked in the poly tunnel yet, but i don't think i'll be getting any more squash or courgettes and if everything doesn't perk up soon, it doesn't look like i'll be getting anything else either

Went out in the dark with a torch last night and harvested the last of the winter squashes before the temperature really dropped but don't think we had it as cold as some people as we're pretty sheltered at home. Will have to find out next year what it's like on the plot.

Which one are you and is it how you want to be?

Strangely we had a frost last night but certain pockets of the allotments weren't affected? I can still see beds of dahlias flowering and the foliage is still green. The bottom of my allotment wasn't affected.....the centre WAS as there's a layer of ice on the water butt........get to the top no ice and no percieved damage! Very strange!

My banana plant was left outside and it's all black and soggy now Think it'll have to go in the shed till the greenhouse is put up. fingers crossed for survival

my supposedly hardy banana plant looks awful too gutted ........ yet my supposedly tropical yucca plant is waving its leaves happily ..... can't win can you ...... mind you the yucca got too big for the house last year, and asbo kept crapping in it, so i stuck it outside, was shocked it survived.

I think that quite a lot of bananas are root hardy over here so you are likely to lose the leaves but the root ball will be OK unless the ground around it freezes solid.

Gosh that's cold. I've started to put bubble wrap in my greenhouse to insulate it. I am lucky as it hasn't got anything in it yet as only just built it ready for next year but it will be good to see how cold it gets. It still gets to 25 during the afternoon but it's about 10 on the temperature meter when we arrive at 10.30am.
I will contemplate a solar panel for heating though as I don't want to put a gas heater in there.
So how do other people keep their greenhouses warm?

A lot of my greenhouse plants are dead / dying too, chillis, tomatoes, fushias, various flowery things given to me by my dad. Managed to harvest 3lb of green/semi ripe tomatoes and 6 large green/red Anaheim chillis before they were damaged.

I have half bubble wrapped it and need to finish it off, also want to get a heater but don't know what to go for. I have electricity just outside the greenhouse but can only have 1kw max.

if it's bubbled then a 1kw should be OK, I only use a 2kw for my 12x8 just make sure you get one that you can switch between 1 and 2 KW and better still on that you can turn the heat off and use it as a fan in the summer to keep the air moving
