  • Whick greenhouse to buy....

    Hello all

At last I am planning on buying a greenhouse. Please can anyone recommend where to buy from (B&Q?) and whether to buy a glass one or plastic - or is this just preference. I need an 8x6. Also I know that I should put air vent system in the windows is there anything else I need to buy.

Before you rush off to B&Q try the local papers, cornershops, Freecycle etc you may get one for nothing!!.

A lot depends what you want to do with it.If you are overwintering then you'll need some bubble wrap (Big bubble is best) you'll need some staging but don't buy it get some roofing laths 2"x1" and you can make it from that far better than the stuff you buy and it's cheaper. If you don't like the colour of wood then stain it with fence guard. If you want the floor space in summer then buy some brieze blocks ( about 70p each or less) and use those for the supports and have a slatted top then come the summer you can move it outside and use it there.

Most 8x6 ghouses come with 1 vent - you'll need another one at least and I'd fit a louvre in the end opposit the door then you'll get good airflow. You don't need autovents but if you can stretch then they are worth it for the roof vents especially if the roof is 8ft in the air like mine !!

Consider the base, when I got my 1st greenhouse it was on a 6" galvanised base and I still banged my head on the roof vents so when I moved it it went onto brieze blocks and now my head is blood free!!

Don't concrete the floor all over if you can help it, whilst its good for damping down in the summer it can be a pain in the winter the water will lie and it stays damp in there. If your not going to grow in the borders then dig out about 6" or so and line with landscape fabrick and fill with small gravel( around 1/4" size if possible)you can stand tubs on there for your toms (better than growbags) and it will drain away any surplus moisture and woodlice etc won't get into the bottom of the pots or put some timber edging round and then you can have a bit more and sink your pots in it and it looks neater.

Finally, pray for a good summer next year
