  • Where to get hold of a greenhouse

    Hi everyone

Does anyone have any ideas on where to buy a reasonably cheap greenhouse? I am looking for an 8' x 6' one that won't break the bank!

    Thanks

Norfolk do a polycarbonate one for about £150. You need a degree in origami to put it together though.

Have a search through the old threads ... there is much and varied discussion on there about greenhouses.

We bought one off ebay earlier this year. It is an 8'x6' Aluminium one. I can't remember the price, but I think it was about £50. Don't get carried away with your bidding, there are lots of them coming up for sale all the time. I have seen them go very cheap and some go for almost as much as new. I looked at the cheapest I had seen sold and set out to get one equally as cheap. When the bidding gets too high let it go and try for another. I ended up paying more then I intended because the growing season had started and there were more buyers to compete with. A month earlier they were going much cheaper. Out of season is the best time to buy. Be careful that there isn't much broken glass. I have seen some for sale with a large amount of glass missing and when you work out the cost of replacing it, the cost of the glass can be as much as buying a new greenhouse. We found one on Buy-it-now, so was able to get it without bidding against anyone else. The people had just bought the house and had young children. So wanted it to go for safety reasons. So they didn't care about the money. Dissmantling was quite a job though. You need to allow 2 or 3 hours. You don't need to worry about the bolts shearing off, as many will, because you can buy replacements easily and cheaply. The same goes for the glass retaining clips. Having looked into wooden greenhouses, I found a report that suggests these are a lot better. The report claimed that heating is cheaper, the plants grow better and produce more and require less watering. However wooden greenhouses are much more expensive and dismantling and transporting would be more difficult.

Having used mine through the summer, I have already found that 8'x6' is too small and wished I had a bigger one.

          Good Luck.

All the above mentioned are good, I got mine from freeads in the UK. Word of mouth is something not to be forgotten. I lost a perfectly good 8 x 6 GH as my friends who had it and no longer wanted it didnt realise I wanted one.

                Cheap greenhouse

Thanks guys, for all the useful info. I am going to start looking now as, hopefully being out of season, I may find one quite cheap!

                Happy gardening!

If you want a new one I would recommend the aluminium one from Norfolk Greenhouses. However it might also be worth you looking at the DIY polytunnel thread here on GYO site

I just got one for free by putting an advert on the notice board in work.

Not seen it yet but i'm told it's about 8x6 and has some glass missing (2 or 3 sheets). I'll go and pick it up next weekend and if there is a lot of glass missing will just use the frame and cover it with poly

                        Well done you!!

If you need to replace glass you need horticultural grade ( it's thinner and cheaper than normal glass) and most glass merchants will stock it. Also if you keep your eye on e-bay there are bundles of twin wall plastic that are 48"x24", you could by 6 or 7 of these (depends how many roof vents you've got) and replace the glass in the roof. Being twin wall it will be warmer and you might be able to get away without bubble wrapping the roof, then you can use the glass from the roof to replace the sides.

Went to day with trailer in tow dragging my dad and the guy next door as additional help to dismantle and collect the greenhouse.

Sadly it was not quite as discribed to me and I ended up having to say thiank but no thanks. There was a lot more glass missing than 2-3 sheets, more like half of it, and there was also half the frame missing. The guy had built his shed onto the greenhouse in a lean-to fassion meaning if we removed the greenhouse the shed would come down with it.

Never mind I'm sure I'll find one in time.

                          Lesson learnt :

Make sure you go view any 2nd hand greenhouse befoe you get too excited and drag friends and family out of bed early on a Sunday morning to help you pick it up !!
