Metal Halide lights were developed in Germany for plant growing,I used them when I kept tropical marine invertebrates in a fish tank.I did read up at the time and with a blue "actinic" flourescent tube, that gave the nearest to sunlight. That was before leds were around.Mercury vapour are cooler lights and cheaper to both buy and run.

Just a little tip from my sad experience. If you are going to buy an LED board with lots of LED's in a grid then look carefully at what the backing material is made of. The ones I have have a form of cardboard backing that absorbed moisture/condensation droplets. This moisture then went through the board to the voltage converting electronics and blew them up! So the lesson is either buy ones for use in greenhouse environments, or use them indoors where there will not be a lot of condensation, or provide additional protection for the back of the boards.

Good advice Headbrewer, I hadn't thought of that. I keep thinking about trying one of the 'led bulbs' and then wondering whether one of the 'led boards' might be better, so that'll help the decision. Did you get any more lights?
