The stuff those builders bulk bags and blue tarps are made of.
I was thinking, ito use instead of weed suppressant fabric as it's lightproof but not waterproof - and usually a heck of a lot cheaper than the 'official' stuff, so a friend says..
You can get large cheap tarps from Poundshops etc.
I've used two ... the cheapest one (sounds like what you mention) shredded within a year, into a million pieces of blue tape; it wasn't UV stable.
the thicker stronger one by Blackspur (10 ft square) (£6 from QD) is still going strong ... it's pegged to the ground weed-suppressing and warming up a patch at the moment.
Amazon and eBay sell them too: http://www.amazon.co.uk/Blackspur-18.../dp/B000R9QHTW
PS. I had a large piece of that builder's bag type fabric, which I covered a rudimentary compost heap with ... it shredded all over the place too. I still haven't picked all the bits out of my soil. You definitely don't want the woven strip kind of fabric, it's sh1t.
