Worrying about my plants

I've got several plants overwintering in the greenhouse (dahlias, fuschias, geraniums etc). I protected them with polystyrene, egg trays, fleece, bubblewrap etc, but I'm thinking it probably wasn't enough for this year. They did fine last year. I don't want to disturb anything though, as it will just let the cold in. I've also got broad beans and sweet peas coming on, as well as auriculas. I know I'll have to wait for the temperature to rise a bit before I check for damage, but not knowing is I'm just hoping that if I lose the plants, the slugs will cop it too

To be honest everything in my greenhouse is frozen solid. If anything at all survives it will be a bonus

i have brought my broad beens in, and something that i cant remember what it was but was doing fine until a few days ago, they are indoors now recovering, left the garlic out though cos the ones in the ground and still doing fine, so the ones in pots should be ok too, the chillies will either survive or not, but i always sow new in spring anyway.

i am seriously considering a proper greenhouse for next year though, if i can afford one, trouble is they are all a bit too big.

I hope your plants will be allright Barleysugar - but it is much colder than your average winter. You're right not to disturb their covers til it's a bit warmer. Sound like you've got them well covered though - so maybe they'll be fine. Do let us know.

that's where you're wrong ... a greenhouse is never big enough

I too am concerned. I only had a few things that might have needed protection so they are under 3 layers of fleece in the greenhouse, and standing on polystyrene.

The veg garden itself got down to -9 last night, the thermometer under the fleece is registering just on freezing - so it's fingers crossed.

I think the plants will be OK. I uncovered stuff yesterday to take a look, and the geraniums and fuschias still have leaves on. Looks as if the vietnamese coriander is OK too! I took the chance to water the lemon bush and peach tree, as they looked a bit dry.
The broad beans and sweet peas that weren't covered seemed to have come through, so not so bad after all. I did wonder if I should dig out the electric fan heater, but I think I'll leave it until I have seedling coming on later.
