  • aparagus beds under glass...

    hi all

i've recently moved to a more permanent greenhouse (an old commercial rose growers one in guernsey!) we have great soil and would love to put in an aspargus bed but really don't have a clue what to do

can anyone help? can it be done even? any information greatly recieved

No doubt someone with a heck of a lot more experience than me will give you a proper answer, but my first thought is that asparagus is a permanent plant taking up a lot of space for just 6 weeks or so cropping. Would that not be a waste of space growing it in a greenhouse? Or is the greenhouse so huge that you'll be able to grow other stuff as well?
My girls found their way into my heart and now they nest there

dont grow them under glass, find a big pot or a bed you dont mind being invaded, plant the crowns and wait, the first 2 years you will get growth but the third year you can harvest. These can grow out of control, so make sure you plan where they are going to go. If you are not wanting much, then only plant a couple of crowns.

      hope this helps

thanks for the advice! yes the greenhouse is fairly big i have about 50ft by 30ft but i guess it will have to wait until i have my own garden (i rent the greenhouse as i live in a flat) or try the pot idea.....

        cheers
