heated propagators

ive just got myself a double heated propagator AT LAST with the vouchers i got for our local garden centre for christmas,
im going to put in toms and silverskin onions, do i leave it on all the time till they germinate, it will be in the spare room which is still heated in the evening
while our heating is on, it comes on at 5.30pm and goes of at 10pm but it is turned down to 2 instead of 5, so would i keep the prop on then, or will it be to hot, i really dont know much about them so any help will be great, it doesint have a thermostat on it if that info helps,

Hi I'm not certain that onion sneed the extra heat from the propagator, but am sure someone will put you right.

I didn't put mine 'on' for the toms as I worked out that it raised the temp too high and the heating was on so I just put the lids on and they all came up fine. The temp drop overnight wsn't severe enough to warrant putting it one, but again I am sure someone more experinced will tell you what to do. I've only had mine since xmas too! Great fun, playing with dirt as my OH says

There is an 'all things onion' etc thread on here currently. I have mine in cold frame, but think some have them just on windowsills with no extra heat. Worth having a look?

I started my onions off indoors, in a cool room, no extra heat, then put them out into the unheated greenhouse once they started to show. The haven't 'unhooked' yet, but they're looking OK.

I don't heat my spare room ...?
Do you need to? Just heat your propagator.
Personally, I think you're too early to sow silverskins Onion Seed 'Paris Silverskin' (Pickling) (Allium cepa 'Paris Silverskin')
