  • Germinating on Windowsills

Will the windowsills above heated radiators be to warm for germinating seeds?

I can move the seedlings to an unheated propagator in front of French windows to grow on and harden them off in a plastic greenhouse and a cold frame in due course.

i germinate all my seeds on top of the boiler, then transfer to cold windowsills when they start growing .... it's not mega hot though, guess it depends what temp your radiators are at

You may well get wild temperature swings during the day and night, especially if its a sunny day and a frosty night.

I just use the end of my kitchen worktop, Everything germinates ok.

        germination

very few vegetable plants need light to germinate celery being one.only heat and moisture are necessary for germination.i start all my vegetables in the hot press i check them twice a day in the morning and at night.once the seed germinates i put in a sunny window sill.very few vegetable go wrong with this method.we have a solid fuel heating system so our hot press is always warm

For the past two years I have germinated all my seeds on my windowsill which is also above a radiator. As long as the temperature isn't too high, I think it would be fine, I've had no problems so far

I have my propagators on windowsills above radiators during the day but move them onto the dining table during the night. The heat from the radiators is fine, but being really cold next to a window at night isn't so great.

I put my propagators on my dinningroom windowsill. It`s above a radiator which doesn`t work, but it`s south facing and I`ve had no problems with my seeds germinating. If it gets to warm I take the top off in the day and put it back on at night. I turn the tray often so as the seedlings don`t all lean to much to one side.
