I did email my local council environment dept this morning, not holding much hope of a speedy response - though you never know. I might follow it up with a phone call tomorrow.

Thanks again for all the replies, the main thing was that I did not want to tackle it without advice and also to have a proper response from the council. I will let you know what happens!
Excuse me, could we have an eel? You've got eels down your leg.

If it is Asbestos it will be concrete bonded. I cant see why it would be made of Asbestos. It would snap under the strain of the washing in the wind.

I would have person one hold the top person two hosing it down and then give it a belt at ground level with a sledge hammer.

if that doesn't work I would dig it out intact.

Our Household Refuse Site, AKA The Tip will not take any asbestos under any circumstances, you have to arrange and pay for hazardous material disposal.

The alternative, apparently, is to double bag it and bury it over six feet down!

The second alternative as noticed by the BBC is to place it upon a transit and accidentally trigger the tipper when going down a road in Essex.

        And feel for this chap.
Always thank people who have helped you immediately, as they may not be around to thank later.

          This is the problem!

I think I can take it down without disturbing it.
I don't think I can transport it anywhere as it is simply too long.

I don't want to break it up into manageable bits.

I will call them tomorrow, their website has no info that I can find (aside from about 3 tips that will accept bonded sheets).

Thanks again for comments. I concur that farmer is a poor man.
