  • Large compost bags instead of grow bags advice please ?

Hi, it has occured to me that grow bags are basically thin compost bags or at least they are similar.

On one side of my dodgy but large placie greenhouse I am hoping to lay bags on the floor along one side to grow in. This would be similar to a raised bed perhaps ?. I wondered if I could use bags of compost as they would allow more depth for the roots to grow in as opposed to the slimmer 'grow bag'. Is this a good or bad idea and has it been done many times before.

I am thinking of using standerd grow bags for tomato plants ( feeding once trusses are set as instructed) and maybe these much deeper compost bags for vigorous plants that require a lot of nutrition such as squash.

Can I have some advice / opinion on the practicality of this please.

    Cheers Mas

I always use copost bags rather than grow bags as you say there is more room for roots

i used grow bags last year from wilkies cos they were cheaper, but i just used them for the compost, not for the bag.

This bandwagon has been jumped on by Humax who are marketing large bags of compost with different nutrients for different veg. Organic Fruit and Vegetable Bags
I can't see why you couldn't just do your own though! The really big bales of compost would probably be hard work as they are so compacted, but the looser packed ones should be fine.

Looking good then , I shall try a mixture of grow bags and deeper compost bags. I will mix the crops compare the results and report what happens
