  • carport conversion to greenhouse/polytunnel

Ive decided that the greenhouses are not tall enough so i will use the greenhouse later in the year when i make more room to put it, im going to install one of my carports / tempory garages that i got from costco, we used to use them in fields as marquees as we used to go to a lot of outdoor model aeroplane shows selling glue so i know they will stand the wind, they are made from 2 inch steel tubing with pins in all the joints and bits to tighten the roof end to end to stop it wobbling.

My problems i need to solve are now

    1) i cant use the covers that come with it as there brown
    2) theres no bar along the bottom of it

Im thinking along the lines of building it up, no covers on, then 20foot wide polythene, or similar (preferably clear) to cover it, like the norfolk greenhouses have, i will use sticky tape on the top corner ends and center bar of the roof etc

At the bottom, i cant decide wether to use a big bar of wood with 2 inch holes in to slot the legs into and to attach the covers onto? , this seems to be the best way?

Has anyone tried this/similar before? , what type of plastic sheet would be best, can i get crystal clear easily?

this is the same/similar garage i have , we got them from costco, im not sure how tall that one is but mine is over 6foot at the edges and to touch the top would be a good 10 foot in the center

Depends how big you want. My 12 x 8 is 6ft 5" at the sides. I bought it from elite and had it modified to sit on 2 rows of exterior grade concrete blocks. As to coves for your carport, it doesn't need to be clear - most plastic sheeting isn't and Glass won't be if you put bubble insulation on the inside. Come the summer it will provide a bit of shade.

As to attaching plastic, I'd fasten wood to the frame and then attach the plastic using wooden battens to sandwich the plastic. You'll need to put some anti hotspot tape on the frame first. If you look on NA KAys or Plastic by post websites they sell replacement polytunnel covers that will fit the bill.

So to do it in 2m wide pieces of plastic sheet , along it i would, put a bar at the bottom, between 2 of the legs, screwed onto the legs, put strong sticky tape along it stick the polythene onto it at the bottom, then pull over the top to the other side pulling tight, then stick in place to another wooden bar, i then do the seams between panels and add another bar and the cover etc,
when thats done i would screw wooden bar onto the outside of the cover screwed to the wooden bar the cover is already glued to, to pull tight squashing the cover between them?
Its not so much to have the top clear, i wanted to have the sides clear so it looked better (even though i would have to keep it tidy!), so plants can be seen from in the house etc , to shade the sun i could add another layer to the top

I'd do it in one sheet straight over, I don't think that sticky tape would be strong enough - it'll be just like a huge sail if we get the normal strong winds. I assume you'll won't doors in the ends as well? ...
