Potting on chill's

I bought some small plants at the weekend, in 3" pots.
I intend to grow them in 8" or 9" pots, do I have to go up in increments of pot size, or can I just put them straight in a big pot.
I have used grow bags for chilli's in the past, but this year I'm hoping to try to over winter some indoors.
Don't know what sort of chilli, bought it from a wyevale garden centre, just says "chilli plant" on the lable, suspect it's either cayenne type or jalapeno.

The plants would prefer you to pot them on a size or 2 at a time because they dislike sitting in cold/wet compost and if you put them straight into a big pot then the roots will be surrounded by a lot of spare compost. They'll probably survive it, especially if you're very careful not to over-water, but they'll spend a lot of time putting on root growth at the expense of top growth so might be later to fruit.

Thanks SarzWix, moved them up to a 4" pot today, but was surprised they weren't rootbound so could probably have left them a while. Is there an accurate way to tell when to pot on, or is it just when the pot looks a bit small for the plant?

Look at the bottom of the pot Compost Corner. If you can see the roots coming through the holes then pot on. If you can't see any roots the plant should be fine. Alternatively knock the plant gently out of it's pot and have a look.
