New greenhouse selection

As a newbie to both veg growing and indeed this forum i thought i should ask a very basic but difficult question.
I have asked this on my introduction thread but thought i should add it here where it belongs.

I am looking for a greenhouse,maybe 6x6 and possibly 8x6 but need to convince the wifey about that one.I have two girls aged 4 and 7 and am looking at either toughened glass or polycarbonate.The ploy route problems from what i have read are mainly about the sheets blowing away in high winds.

It will be sited next to my house and will be partially sheltered but not completely and it will be sited on my decking so providing a sound base.I know because i built it.

I wish to grow veg such as toms,chilli`s,peppers and such as well as herbs.

Apologies for adding this thread here as its is on my intro but thought it might catch a few more willing helpers.

Welcome Davdandy. If you have room for the 8 x 6 then go for it. You will ALWAYS regret going for the smaller one. Mine is 6 x 6 and is never big enough, especially during the early season. If you want it for your chillies etc (cucumbers, melons tomatoes - the list is endless!!) then you have more scope in a bigger greenhouse.
Assuming you are going for a standard greenhouse (rather than a Norfolk style) then Poly would probably be the best bet for you, especially as you have active children.
Glass is never a good option with littlies around.
I don't think poly blowing out is such a problem in a standard greenhouse but I'm sure others will advise on that.
Don't really know how you can persuade the wife. Possibly by showing her all the replies you are going to get to your query.
I guarantee that pretty well everyone here will advise the bigger greenhouse. And we can't ALL be wrong.
Whatever size we have - it's never big enough!!

Hi Davlandy and welcome to the vine. My greenhouse is 6x8 I wish it was bigger, never enough room Like Sanjo says the regrets will follow if you go for the smaller one. The 6x6 will give you no room to move late in the season when things are in full swing in there! polycarbonate as I'm sure you know would be safer with the kids around but at the end of the day that would be your choice.

What ever you decide good lick with it all at the end of the day what is another 2ft between you and your mrs if it means you can get more food for your family out of it!

Another thought is to go for staging that is either colapsable or easily removeable you might be glad of the extra growing space when your seedlings all become man eating triffids! lol

I am more into thinking the 6x8 is the better choice,it is just that my garden is only modest and as i am totally new to growing i am betwixt between my choice and the nagging wife.

I have just bought this months magazine and on browsing through noticed the Norfolk greenhouse range and look very tempting especially the price.Can anyone offer advice on these and if they are easily adapted to take auto vents and louvre vents for instance.

Davdandy, have a look with the search button as a number of grapes have bought/thought about buying one. These COULD have a possible problem with the poly blowing out, but then you say it will be in a sheltered position. Pays your money and makes your choice I suppose. Anyway, check it out and see what the others have to say on it. Sanjo

EDIT: you would need to buy extra windows in my opinion.... you need at least 2 roof lights and one end light in my opinion.

You know whats a shame the amount of greenhouses sitting in peoples gardens unused, i'm a window cleaner so see hundreds of gardens oh those poor unloved greenhouses sittting there doing nothing. Might start dropping hints soon i have seen a couple of nice ones LOL.
