Toms and Cue's in containers

Am I right in thinking that when growing Tomatoes and Cue's in containers in the greenhouse, that you should plant them at the bottom of the container and then earth up as they grow?

Also; how tall should the plants be before placing them in the containers. At the moment they are in 3" pots.

I think it's usual to 'pot up' the plants as the roots fill the smaller pot. Two inches at a time, so the next size pot will be 5". It 's not so important about the height, it's a good root system you're trying to establish. A tall leggy tomato plant with a poor root system will take ages to get going and will not produce fruit as early.

plant as normal,as they grow you.ll see they produce what are called adventitous roots above the compost, just cover these with a little compost and top up as necessary

When you pot them on plant them upto the seed leaves as they will grow roots upto the seed leaves, mine are in the greenhouse in their final 7.5 lt pots now.
