  • ***** Fluid

I've got some of this to sterilise/wash the greenhouse floor and soil with, but in the back of my mind is a post I read on here saying that you shouldn't use it anymore.

I can't find the thread/post it was on.

Can anyone help with this? Is ***** Fluid OK to use?

    Thanks

    OWG

That is so weird! I was just about to start a new post asking how to sterilise soil - to save me the hassle (ok - lazy I know) of digging out the greenhouse beds.
Not sure about the ***** - all I do know is that it should not be used near cats or fish. I can still use it (if allowed) with my cats and fish, as obviously I will just close the greenhouse door, so the cats won't get in, and the greenhouse is far enough away from the pond.

So I join OWG on this one - can we use the *****? If not, and also for information, is there anything else that can be used?

We used it recently to clean and sterilize the greenhouse frame and glass before assembly, and it is still readily available to buy, so as far as I'm aware no problems in using it, but I will defer to someone with better information and more experience. Nick??????

Don't know about use in this country, but I have always used it to steralise soil, clean and generally around the house! Lived in the Namib desert for eight years and was told by the old folk, that if I poured Jeys around the perimiter of my garden, leaving a gap in the line, that all the beasties would depart and not eat my veg! Did so and it seemed to work! No nasties ate the veg! Mind you made the garden pong a bit! D

Taken from the ***** site so it is safe to use

The Multi-Purpose Disinfectant in a can

***** Fluid can be used for a multitude of outdoor cleaning tasks, from neutralising odours and killing bacteria in and around drains, to disinfecting after pet fouling or clearing up wild and domestic bird mess. It is also perfect for clearing fungi, mould and algae from paths, driveways and patios as well as cleaning and disinfecting pots prior to planting.

I'm not sure but i think the EU had something to do with the use or banning the use of. I may well be wrong but think i can remember somebody posting an item about it.

I still use it for cleaning etc - and will be doing so when I give the greenhouse a good "spring clean". DDL

As far as I know you can still use ***** Fluid. Creosote got banned, is that maybe what you're thinking about.

Armillatox (spelling?) is maybe what your thinking of . It now cant be used for some of the things it used to be used for.

Armillartox & ***** didn't get banned byt the EEC they just never applied for the required "licence" which would cost somewhere in the region of £10k per year!! SO they just sell it as a patio cleaner etc now.

I've never used ***** in the greanhouse (My friend does & allways ends up witha really bad chest as the fumes get to him) but I do use Armillartox.

Should you happen to look at my blog who knows you may find the instructions if it's still there

If you use ***** to sterilise the soil, does it not kill any good organisms in the soil?
Sorry to sound stupid (I look it too!) but how do you use it on the soil - do you just dilute and water the soil with a watering can?

                            ***** Fluid/Armillatox

The great (or should it be grate, because it grates on my nerves) EU strikes again.

With regard to ***** Fluid and Armillatox, yes, they are both readily available in the UK.

What bugs me, is that I have a leaflet which states that Armillatox can be used against moss in grass, honey fungus, clubroot, toxicara canis, and as a soil sterilant against vine weevil eggs.

These items were endorsed by the UK Pesticides Safety Directorate, and the University Horticultural Services, University of Wales, Bangor.

Then along comes the blasted EU which says that you may well have tested the products, but we have not. Until such time as we have taken your thousands of pounds off you, and we come up with the same results as your institutions it will be illegal for your citizens to use the product!!!!

Go tickle up your kilt EU!!!
